Facebook Taps Militarist Think Tank Atlantic Council to Police its Content (Pt 1/2)

From Alex Jones to alleged Russian trolls, major internet companies are increasingly policing content on their platforms. Max Blumenthal of the Grayzone Project says the partnership between Facebook and the Atlantic Council highlights “the merger of the national security state and Silicon Valley.”

  1. There is nothing funnier than watching Max Blumenthal try to hurt Israel by going on RT and defaming the White Helmets. Oh, my mistake. Supporting President Assad, now that's FUNNY!!!!!!

  2. At the risk of sounding religious, surely the root cause of Empire USA is the over fed, over greed driven 51% voting majority that hoards all the land and wealth. They being the only Americans with computers and Internet service, could they not replace Facebook and Twitter with social tools most honest and trustworthy, if they would but give up their corruption and stop being greedy?

  3. Aaron I was disappointed to hear you say you believe there are 1st Am grounds for silencing Alex Jones. For the sake of argument, let’s say that FB, Google, and YouTube were acting as agents of the US govt., and their actions can be considered governmental actions. Alex Jones commentary does not fall into any category that can be excluded from the protections of the 1st Am. Lies are protected by the 1st Am. “Hate speech” is protected by the 1st Am. Calls to violence except
in a situation that incites immediate response is protected by the 1sr Am. The reason for this is simply that most of us would rather not have an authoritarian body determining what is too false, hateful, or violent for us to hear. The recent attacks on Jeremy Corbyn give us a good example of how “hate speech” can be manipulated to repress valid political criticism. Speech can be harmful, but that is, first of all, rarely successfully suppressed through censorship, and, secondly, is an evil that we must endure to retain our important right to express ourselves about unpopular beliefs. The 1st Am is an invioable right precisely because their are no restrictions on content, except in very narrowly interpreted instances where speech transforms into immediate action. Expanding that exception beyond those very limited instances will destroy the protection.

  4. Now they are blaming America's racism, current racism on Russia. Is Russia responsible for American slavery? Is Russia responsible for the lynching of thousand of Black people? Is Russia responsible for the racist genocide against Native Americans? Did Russia militarize America's police force and make it murder thousands of innocent Black and Brown people? Did the Russian president state that Black people have low IQs?

The GOP has picked up for were they left off with the Bush administration. It thinks the current upcoming September is in 2001. September 11, 2001 has long lost its juice to make Americans accept the destruction of rights. It is not social media that is pushing for this censorship. It fears a rise in Black resistance due to the rise in racism in America due to the current administration.

The democrats are no longer the left. They have moved too much towards the center. The progressives, left are the Independents. Independents seek alternative choices other than these two parties.

  5. shame on you max blumenthal for decrying the 911 truth movement as a "krank" alex-jones-specific thing, and double shame on you for then referring only to "the saudi connection" as the only potentially reasonable "wing" of the 911 truth movement. shame. shame. shame. shame. shame. go tell that to the 3000 architects and engineers at AE911Truth who have so tirelessly and selflessly investigated the destruction of the 3 WTC buildings and fought to bring the truth of what happened to the people. shame on you max! shame! and shame on you aaron mate for giving max a pass on this, and selfishly engaging in this behavior yourself at the real news network! shame!

if any of you at the real news network had any amount of a ballsack you would not engage in this behavior, and furthermore you would invite people from AE911Truth on to your show and see what they have to say. if it is all bullshit then you could just have them on and publicly discredit them on your show. why dont you? shame!

  6. one problem posed by your preemptive argument now is that, only 20 or so people turned up in support of unite the right. far more counter protestors and police turned up and at one point the police seemed to engage in some provocation. the police clearly knew the low turnout early on because of how much protection they gave to such a small number of supporters who were given a police escort on their departure. as the supporters were prepared to leave in a single van, the mainstream news organization were given exclusive passage over to the counter protestors. at which point the police seemed to know to begin the provocations on the counter protesters. one would assume that the mainstream media knew that the unite the right supporters would not be violent so no antagonism footage would be got from that camp. however, the police seemed willing to fill that gap.

but the point is, how do you explain these on the ground realities in terms of your claims about the effect of the Atlantic Council activities. after looking at the pages you are referencing, Atlantic Council seem interested in connections to what they consider Russian activities. as follows.

“Resisters” interacted with one of the Russian Internet Research Agency accounts —already disabled by Facebook— back in 2017. The latest batch of “bad actors” activities contained similarities to the Internet Research Agency, but disguised their efforts better using VPNs, internet phone services and third parties to purchase their ads."

again, your predictions are not born out by the actual concrete events on the ground and what is inferred in the Atlantic Council page, seems to do with certain actors who pretend to be on the Left but are really part of a wider disinformation campaign for the purposes of division confusion and chaos. sort of like a Russian doll of falsehoods idea. in that, it supports a continuation of a wider narrative of Russian interference. these layers of disinformation make it hard for you to communicate the complexities and this is why disinformation works to support the Narrative of Russian interference.

one can then ask, who this Narrative benefits and what this Narrative provides. ultimately it provides the requisite money and power for any entities benefiting from a cold-war Narrative.
Putin already has His own cold-war Narrative inside Russia, so it only may benefit Putin to some degree but, might also present some cost. but it is probable that it would provide useful for beneficiaries inside America more. non the less it is a return to a cold war narrative in all cases.

if this analysis is correct one could expect the following dynamics. the degree to which any narrative is found to both support that narrative, but be on the opposite side, is the degree to which that opposition will be targeted. additionally, the degree to which any other movements are seen to weaken the interests of those engaged in providing that narrative, is the degree to which those movements will similarly become targets of censorship. the justification for any censorship will be provided by claiming patterns of behavior which are highlighted in this statement on that page.

"It’s clear that whoever set up these accounts went to much greater lengths to obscure their true identities than the Russian-based Internet Research Agency (IRA) has in the past… We face determined, well-funded adversaries who will never give up and are constantly changing tactics.”

  7. this is comical. The same group who brought us Russiagate (via Alperovich) is now deciding what is and isn't news. Incredible stuff. What a fucking world

  8. The Atlantic Council also just held a conference about documenting War Crimes in Syria, media in civil society, and all kinds of other 'icky' topics that upset authoritarian states.

100 times out of 100 I will take our values of freedom of speech and assembly in the West over whatever exists in Russia, Syria, Venezuela, North Korea, etc.

  9. Aron. I respect your journalistic skills. However, just out of curiosity, have you investigated the Sandy Hook event? Have you looked at all the evidence, or are you just going with the consensus narrative?

  10. That so called Russian campaign is mostly Donald Trumps own Project Alamo. so the crack down on dissent is part of the next stage in a more general program.

  11. For the past couple years, the US has seemed more and more like that movie "The Act of Killing", especially the role of media, and now social media.

  12. The problem with the Alex Jones removal from most social media platforms is the a business has removed his speech. If he did something wrong it should be decided in the court of law and a private company should not have the right to remove his speech. This what Jimmy Dore said and I agree with him.

  13. I suggest, Facebook only allows weather forecast, receipes, flower pictures, and nature videos. This should be clean enough lol

  14. You guys really need to include cross links between different multi-part videos. Especially when the different parts are not named the same.

  15. A key point is made here. Data corporations need to be collectivized if any of these issues are going to be properly addressed.
