Suspect Fleeing on Bicycle Gets Shot After Firing Gun at Modesto Police Officer

Modesto, California — On Saturday, June 3rd, 2023, at 10:03 p.m. Modesto Police Officer Raihil Sharma contacted, 29-year-old Gordon Massey on his bike. Initially Massey was cooperative with officer Sharma, however when officer Sharma ran Massey’s name, on the in-car computer, Massey rode away on his bike. It was at this time, the information that returned on Massey, indicated he had a felony warrant for his arrest. Officer Sharma drove after Massey, attempting to stop him, but Massey continued riding away.

While fleeing from officer Sharma, Massey retrieved a handgun and fired two separate volleys of shots towards officer Sharma, resulting in one round entering the front passenger compartment of Officer Sharma’s patrol car and hitting the front passenger headrest. Officer Sharma continued following Massey, in an attempt to stop him. The incident continued onto Miller Avenue where an officer-involved shooting took place. Massey received Medical Aid from officers until paramedics arrived. He was then transported to a local hospital, where he was treated for non-life-threatening injuries. Shortly after receiving treatment, he was arrested and charged with attempted murder of a police officer.

In addition, Massey had active warrants for driving under the influence and multiple felony drug charges. He was booked into the Stanislaus County Jail. The firearm used by Massey was recovered and identified as a stolen .45 caliber semi-automatic handgun. No one else was injured in this shooting. Massey was charged with attempted murder of a police officer, assault on a peace officer with a semiautomatic firearm; shooting at an occupied vehicle; negligent discharge of a firearm; being a felon in possession of a Smith and Wesson semiautomatic firearm; being a felon in possession of 9 mm ammunition; and possession of methamphetamine while in the immediate possession of a firearm. He also faces enhancement on several of the charges for using a firearm.
