Mesa, Arizona — On Saturday, June 10, 2023, Arizona Department of Public Safety (AZDPS) troopers and fellow Street Racing Task Force partners responded to reports of vehicles involved in intersection takeovers throughout the Valley. During an incident at an intersection in Mesa, one of the involved drivers struck a pedestrian participant and then fled the scene. With assistance from task force partners, including the Mesa Police Department, Phoenix Police Department and Tempe Police Department, the suspect vehicle was located and an AZDPS sergeant successfully deployed the Grappler Police Bumper, netting one of the vehicle’s rear tires and bringing it to a safe stop. The driver and passenger, both 17-year-old males, were detained and cited for street racing and the vehicle was impounded.

  1. Friday and Saturday nights streets here in Phoenix turn into raceways, motorcycles doing trick riding. Police are not around to enforce the laws at night. I was going to get out there a checkered flag wave it. When you complain to the police, they send a Motocycle traffic officer to bust people driving home from work at 5pm go 10-12 over the limit.

  2. They came out with it how many years ago an saw how effective it was in testing an are jus now letting officers try them out. I honestly believe out of all the pursuits that ended horribly could've had a better outcome with this gear

  3. No way California will be using that. Can't make money with a 40 seconds live pursuit coverage.

  4. Have always wanted to see the ol' grappler in action. Seems it did exactly what it was designed to do. That was so cool!

  5. Did it work TOO WELL?!? Is THAT why we don't have these on EVERY police car? They need something that costs twice as much, and only works half the time. Sorry THIS is too effective.

  6. I know this is not a politically correct opinion. But I think if you endanger the safety of the public and law enforcement with some childish, "I Do What I Want" d0oshbaggery, they should get to rough you up a little while arresting you. – For the previous 2,000 year, until 20 minutes ago, ALL societies understood the value in doing so. – It goes a long way toward both reducing recidivism AND not emboldening every thug who watches yesterday's thug get the red carpet treatment by the cops, only to have the local savages cry "PO-LEES BROOTALITY," whether there was cause or not. — But now, welcome to the world that Democrats made.

  7. "Defund the police" is such an insanely dangerous rhetoric that is being spread around. They need proper funding, and to make sure those funds are actually going to what they need to. More training and equipment like this makes it safer for everybody.

  8. This tool needs to become ubiquitous in all police departments in this country. It will save a lot of lives.

  9. Well that worked well. Just think of all the cars Arkansas state patrol could save getting these.
