The Role the US Played in Reversing Latin America’s ‘Pink Tide’

A mere ten years ago almost all countries in South and Central America had left or center-left governments in office. Now only a handful remain. How did this happen? We speak to CEPR’s Mark Weisbrot about how Under Secretary of State Thomas Shannon might have described to Secretary of State Mike Pompeo the US effort to do help bring this change about

  1. Looks like the ‘Pink Tide’ is actually making a comeback, Argentina is likely going to elect Fernandez, Piñera in Chile has very numbered days as the people despise him, Uruguay will remain leftist, and Ecuador is taking a leftward shift turn from the inside out. Mexico also elected a leftist in 2018 and Venezuela is still standing as well as Bolivia.

  2. Anyone trying to excuse left-wing politicians in Latin America from the disaster they created is either a fool or an idiot. American interventionism is nothing compared to the damage of marxistl-like policies have caused in the region.

  3. A lot of agreement in these comments but I heard nothing about the other point of view.
Why would you give aid to someone doing something you dislike?
How many independent countries are actually US dependent?

  4. The right wingers take over a country (with US blessings), they torture, murder and the stability of the country is destroyed. The refugees then flee towards a more stable country (?), the US. They get exploited and bullied by being blamed as scabs and kicked out. Throughout this, the Oligarchies of the world make more power and profits.

  5. The failure to build socialism also led to the return of right-wing governments. None of these so called ''leftist'' governments ever made the move to abolish capitalism. U.S imperialism supported the return of the right-wing to power, but win-out the disillusion of millions it would not have been possible. The political left in Latin America needs to brake with capitalism in order to defeat U.S imperialism for good.

  6. Thank you for not addressing the core deficiencies of these left wing governments and how over the years squandered public founds, engaged in wode spread corruption and put in office officials based on party affiliation and not experience/skills. Argentina got robbed by the Krischner clan, how Lula hedged is entire economy on petrobras and the criminal kicbacks, and lets not even touch Venezuela…

  7. We in the USA have the opportunity to reach out to Latin America, to make spanish our second language, and to become good friends with the people to the south of us, but we don't. we don't because we are ignorant and foolish. look at how difficult it is for the european union – with 28 different languages. we only have to learn one – spanish – and yet we are too stupid to do even that. what an opportunity we are throwing away. Now China has a plan to create a new Silk Road. It will connect three continents – Asia, Africa and Europe. It is the most ambitious project the world has yet seen, overshadowing anything we have done in the New World. We here in the US look back with pride on our ancestors who built a railroad connecting New York City with Seattle, Washington. But that will be small potatoes when China builds a highway and marine transportation system connecting Shanghai with Nairobi, Mumbai, Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, and so on. We should be thinking this way about Latin America, about how we can connect North and South America. The very least we should be teaching spanish in school, a minimum of two years at the high school level. And then we can think about how can we move goods from Seattle to Val Paraiso, Chile, and around the continent, or having an Inter-american highway from LA to Buenas Aires. This opportunity is staring us right in the face, but we are pissing it away.

  8. The biggest problem, with Brasil, is that the brasilian population is even more stupid and ignorant, than the one of the U.S (a spectacular achievement)…. Accordingly, most people can be led, by the nose, as common cattle…

  9. Leftist governments fail when they drive out the wealth creators and run out of things to steal and give away in return for votes.
