Harriet Tubman and the battle for America’s symbols w/Clarence Lusane | The Chris Hedges Report

The debate over America’s symbols and monuments has sharpened with the growing mass movement for racial justice in the past decade. The lionization of slave-owners and genocidaires has been pointed out by many as in contradiction to the ideals of democracy and racial justice so often touted as national core values. In the midst of this debate, the decision by the US Treasury to place Harriet Tubman alongside Andrew Jackson on the $20 bill starting in 2030 has incited controversy. Howard University professor of political science Clarence Lusane joins The Chris Hedges Report to discuss the Harriet Tubman dollar bill, and the stakes of the debate over national symbols in righting the historical wrongs of slavery and white supremacy.

Dr. Clarence Lusane is a full Professor, former Chairman of Howard University’s Department of Political Science, and current Director of the International Affairs program. He is an author, activist, scholar, lecturer, and journalist. His most recent book is ‘Twenty Dollars and Change: Harriet Tubman and the Ongoing Fight for Racial Justice and Democracy’.

  1. I don't think symbols are nearly as important as liberal America claims they are. Or at least modern liberal Americans discount how quickly symbols are co-opted by capital (in this case, literally).

  2. When I see a statues of figures such as Andrew Jackson, I'm moved by the daily tributes bestowed upon them by thousands of our feathered friends. 🤣

  3. If you want to devalue our dollar, this is a good way to do it. But go ahead and let the leftists have their way and run this country into the ground. They're already making inroads in our major cities with the non-prosecution of criminals

  4. Looks like a political stunt whites don't want show non whites in a position of power where they could start a tendency and gain more power. By 2030 physical money will be most likely gone

  5. Jackson cause the first US economic Depression in 1840s.
He gave all Federal bank $$$ to private banks he favored, then those banks "failed".

  6. While I'm all for Tubman being on the bill, the Jackson smear here is rather one dimensional. While he certainly was no saint, neither was he the demonic man being labeled here. It's not so much he "created" the democratic party but perhaps the first populist party. Let's face it, how many war criminals have we had as president and people laud over them. I can't think of any president that did not have his foibles and easily 20% where just down right worse than Jackson and had a complete negative impact on America. IMHO, Jackson would be more than grateful to be removed from any currency he loathed banksters so much.

  7. This is ludicrous and the Black community should be against it. How are you going to put Harriet Tubman on a bill as symbol of freedom when you're still NOT treating her descendants as full citizens?

  8. 1000$ bill,duh.100 doll hairs is what a 20 is worth,a loaf of bread will cost 100$,soon—–《Bible》
Reprint the thousand$ billygoat and settle this now!😮

  9. Harriet Tutman was a man in drag….

Since America already had a gay president (Obama, ) it's no surprise they would put another transgender on the $20.00 bill.

  10. We play into their game by calling it critical "race" theory.
RACE is nothing to be critical of.
RACISM is what we need to be critical of.
Critical racism theory needs to be talked about and taught.

  11. I have nothing against tearing down confederate monuments and other changes. However- It seems to me that our ruling elite would much rather perform these symbolic changes than actually do ANYTHING to alleviate the crushing poverty that is afflicting 70% of the population. The struggle and begrudged concessions are a distraction, so that they may continue to enrich themselves off the labor of the working class.

  12. I don't know who she is that well – I know whe was a really important figure in US history. I do know a bit more about Andrew Jackson and I think yes, Harriet Tubman should be on the bill – but her and her alone.

  13. NOTE !!!! HARRIET TUBMAN'S GLORIOUS & HONORABLE LEGACY CANNOT BE ( DEMORALIZED & TAINTED = BY THE IMAGE OF THIS ( WICKED NATIONS CURRENCY AMERIKKA ) =A COUNTRY THAT CONTINUALLY -(STATE SANCTION MURDER HER BLACK NATIONS – DECENDANTS – HER B 1 – BLACK NATIVE AMERICANS = WHICH THEY CONTINUALLY INSULT – HER LEGACY BY REFUSING TO PAY ( REPERATIONS = IN BEGINNING T REPAR THE DAMAGE THE( AMERIKKKA ) HAS CAUSED & CONTINUALLY DOUBLE DOWN ON THE MURDER & SABOTAGE . / YOU ARE A LIA & A MURDERER … ( DO NOT TOUCH & TAINT THE LEGACY OF HARRIET TUBMAN // THE LORD REBUKE U SATAN …RIGHTEOUSNESS WILL PREVAIL…

  14. Only whites would think putting a freedom fighter on the same bill of a genocidal maniac. Like, seriously, who are you people?

  15. Make a $30 bill and put Tubman on it.
She's a hero. Her legacy deserves a bill. But keep Jackson on the $20 bill. He wasn't half the monster that Lincoln or Hamilton was.
After you get rid of those two, THEN get rid of Jackson. Priorities, people. Priorities.

  16. Really Chris? Even a liberal can admit the contributions of the intelligent, creative and industrious whites of Europe, and the Chinese. To say the nation was built only by blacks is disingenuous and incorrect. Revisionist history is a dangerous thing.

  17. Enlight of the lies that have been told about since the beginning I don't approve of the removal of the statutes because in less than a one hundred years they will rewrite history and say slavery never happen.
