Monster Transmission Failure?

While driving my 1990 C1500 with a 4L60E built by Monster Transmission, I lost 3rd and 4th gear. I was able to get the truck back to the shop in 2nd gear fortunately.

Monster Transmission offers a 90 day warranty on their transmissions. I’m well outside of that, but they were kind enough to do a complete rebuild (according to them), but I had to pay shipping. I got the transmission back and installed it in the truck. So far, no issues, but given that Monster Transmission was not forthcoming on what the issue was with the transmission, I can only hope that it’s fixed.

What have your experiences been with Monster Transmission?

  1. Monster transmissions are terrible, they are a terrible company and they sell junk. The truth is you rarely get an actual transmission they built unless it’s custom.all stock or slightly modified is coming from up north.

  2. Of ALL the people , i cant understand why the skilled Eric the car guy would buy a Monster tranny ? The reviews from Monster are so very bad . Infact i believe they are involved with a class action law suite?
If Monster has given Eric the tranny for advertising reasons?- that would be understandable . The fact they did not clearly identify the failure is another strike for Monster. I wonder how the replacement is holding up?

  3. Do not buy from them. Your better off going local. They sent me the wrong transmission and will not respond to calls or emails. Only response I get is “we will pass it along”. I finally got someone after 6 months of calling and emails. They offered to replace it if I paid the shipping.Thats BS you sent the wrong one. Its not a warrenty claim! You screwed up! Besides I can go to the parts store and order one for a little more than shipping cost. Point is stay local its not worth it. I bet someone at monster may know transmissions. But you will never talk to that person. That person will never know of or see your transmission. Its all BS…
I gave clear instructions of what I needed. The guy kept asking for a vin number. I explained several times not to use the vin# to order my transmission as it is a custom job. I sent detailed info and serial number etc. off my old one. What do you think happened? Yup sent me one based off the vin#.

  4. I had a similar issue with a (stock) 700r4, where it stopped going into 3rd and 4th or would slide in the gear but there would be nothing. Turned out the shop had forgotten to adjust the TV cable and it burnt the clutches in both gears. Im not too sure how the 4l60e works tho

  5. Monster Screwed Us!! They are liars and do not stand behind their product. Maybe they did right by you but could care less for the average person!! Monster should advertise "BUYER BEWARE!!!"

  6. My First (700r4) I rebuilt, i did by the manual plus youtube vids and forgot to replace broken tv cable, so clutch packs burned up. Second rebuild was a stage 2 overhaul but learned my driveshaft was spinning so rear differential or axles grenaded. Those transmissions have power if built right and updated -good luck

  7. In my experience, I can't trust a Monster transmission as far as I can throw it. A few years ago, the 5 gear planetary grenaded in the stock 4L70e in my 2007 GMC Sierra VortecMax, so I ordered what was supposed to be a built 4L70 from Monster. About a year and a half after I bought it and installed it, the 2-4 band broke so I pulled the transmission out and disassembled it myself and found nothing more that 4L60 or 65 internals, including a 4 gear planetary. So no, I did NOT receive a 4L70, like I ordered and payed for. But being in a jam because it is my primary vehicle, I just put it back together with a new, wide 2-4 band (like should have already been in my "built" so called "4L70") and have been driving it for almost exactly a year. Today, I was accelerating into traffic and BOOM! Loud bang and no go…. just like when the original planetary gear grenaded. So to say I'm NOT happy with Monster transmissions, is a major understatement. 🤬😡😠😤

  8. Damn it, I was just minutes away from ordering a Monster transmission. What level trans do you have installed? Any other transmission companies you would recommend?

  9. Thanks for this almost made this mistake and ordered one from monster They have a class action lawsuit against them

  10. they are a complete scam, don't believe 'Eric the Car Guy' or 'The Ass Monkeys' or 'The Turd Maker', they get their parts for free in turn for the advertising. Monster Transmission is pure garbage and the company is a total scam, none of their parts are performance, the work is completely incompetent, the warranty is a useless. Avoid them at all cost or you will pay the price!

  11. Yeah, I've heard way too much negativity concerning Monster. Like others have said, I think th only reason they worked with you is because of who you are and the following you have. I don't trust them.

  12. In my mind you only get one opportunity and then word of mouth gets around hopefully you did good and built it right now your name is trash

  13. If and I mean if monster transmissions were used at the gas monkey shop or whatever they said it was probably a favor so they could get free transmissions but I'm sure they quit after the first one or two it's junk they're junk then you got to send them all the way over to Florida God I hate ripoffs and I blew it it's my fault. My wife said you know what I looked at the reviews and I know it's already shipped to you but it's not looking good Dan! She was right
