Factory Five Inspection with David Pohli (Episode 1)

Link to Episode 2: https://youtu.be/zV2D-CpyudQ

One of my viewers has brought me his Factory Five Cobra replica to rebuild for him. Since this is the first Factory Five I’ve worked on, I called in an expert, David Pohli. David has built several of these cars for not only himself, but for clients, and the Ohio Cobra Club for their charity auctions.

In this video we do a complete inspection of the car and go over the best plans based on what the owner wants from this car. If you are considering a Factory Five car, I highly recommend this video. David shares a lot of his valuable knowledge about these cars that can save you a ton of time, money, and effort.

Even if you’re not planning on getting a Factory Five car, this is still a great video, full of useful information for any build you might be considering. Also, these cars are wicked cool!

  1. I was talked out of putting an automatic trans in mine getting used to driving a stick again I can send you some pics it’s crazy everybody looks at you when you are at a stop light and gives the thumbs up and I try to stay humble

  2. A touchy hydraboost is typically from improper pedal ratio. Many times you have to raise the pin on the brake pedal with hydraboost over conventional power brakes. Issue I have ran into way too often at work with hydraboost conversions of old vehicles.

I may do it on my '82 F150 I am doing my 306 build on but if I do it due to lack of engine vacuum I would be sourcing OE components such as a 88 – 90 F-super duty brake pedal and a 88 – 90 F-superduty hydraboost assembly which will be a straight bolt in for me and economical than going with an aftermarket company like hydratech that uses a GM hydraboost

On the fuel pump, you can throw a walbro high pressure EFI pump on a foxbody fuel pump sending unit. Done it on a foxbody with a 347 stroker I installed at work few years back. Same thing im doing with my 82 F150 with the sniper stealth EFI, I am going to run a new 85/86 fuel tank replace the lift pump on the fuel pump sending unit assembly with a 255 LPH walbro pump with a Corvette style fuel filter/pressure regulator back by the tank to return straight back to the return. The foxbody pressure line like any other EFI pressure line would be a 3/8" size and you can use a -6 AN to 3/8" quick disconnect for the pressure and -6 AN to 5/16" quick disconnect for the pressure and return. Running return in 3/8" line with the short 5/16" hardline at the sender will not create a noticeable backpressure on the return system to be a problem.

As far as FFR goes, I always wanted to build a Coupe and I saw they now have a new Gen of Coupe that is larger which would be more comfortable for someone of my heigth. But sadly I may build a American Graffiti style deuce coupe with my tweaks to it instead.

  3. I mean, it's a roadster! Air con?… why?…. 30mph is your air con! This is absolutely a 3 pedal car, but sure, automatic, if you must. In my opinion, the Cobra has the ugliest hard top in creation, it just doesn't go. That car is most beautiful topless. Unless the aircon is to cool your legs from heat radiating from the engine. Brace that trans tunnel, change those god awful wheels and don't overpower it. Nothing says, I'm going nowhere like spinning your wheels.

  4. You’d be better-off using the chassis as a welding jig to build a real chassis from scratch with some round 4130 tubing from Wicks Aircraft Supply et al. That has to be the saddest looking chassis I’ve ever laid my eyes on. An Oreo cookie tray has a better 1st torsional mode. Think space frame….plenty of info on the web. Triangulate all those joints. Ditch the sheet metal skirts and laminate some sheet foam with fiberglass…or at least make some aluminum sandwich panels to stiffen those sections in the tunnel. Forget the mechanicals. Get that chassis sorted.

  5. hello Eric you and the other mechanic bough got 100% I tell you one the end who is the other mechanic ,,,,you doing a great job too, in any vehicle ,,,but I have to take 1 point way from one of yous…and I will take the point off from you..why? this is why….because the other mechanic can say this…have you got a clue yet? nooooo…the other says all the time every time .)))))))) IF I CAN DO IT ,YOU CAN DO IT…HAHAHA DO YOU KNOW WHO? ITS YOUR FIREND LOL… SOUTH MAIN REPAIR

  6. Hi I have an 03 Lincoln Town Car 2v 4.6l with 140k. The car runs like a clock 99.9% of the time. However sometimes when idling at full operating temperature it starts misfiring bad (PO354 cylinder 4 ignition coil primary/secondary circuit). Then will go away after a minute or so and run perfect again. Changed the plugs with motorcraft platinum and swapped the coil pack from a different cylinder no fix. What would be the next thing to look into? Thanks

  7. Hi I have Mazda cx7 for 6 years no problem. But month ago valve lifters make me crazy .I took it to the michanic. Like 4 mechanic they told me go buy a used engine what you think

  8. I just subbed to a 10 year old video about flushing heater cores. My how far we have come from that chilly garage! Keep killin' it brother!

  9. ERIC, I HOPE YOU SEE THIS COMMENT!
I've been following you on your Facebook page also, and today I saw the heads, and then I went back to see the picture of the pistons when they looked like the valves were hitting on two of the cylinders. Then I noticed that the valves in the head are OFF-SET. The intake valves are NOT in the same place on all the cylinders (take one head for example). On the first and third cylinders, the intake valves are on one side, and on cylinders two and four, they are on the other side, which means two of the pistons MUST be turned 180 degrees to match the heads. Am I seeing this correctly, or is it a figment of my imagination?

  12. Hi Eric. Perfect timing, I'm in the same situation. I'm completing a MK3 FFR cobra for a friend this winter. It has an aluminum block 4 cam 4.6 L modular cobra motor. It's a tight fit. I appreciate your insight. I will be watching all your videos on this project.

  13. Hey Eric, love your videos!! Im 22 and i have a 1972 Chevy pickup and i was wondering if you could make a complete rewiring video on a similar truck? I have no clue what to do.

  14. Hi Eric, i was watching your “response” video to one you had put out earlier about synthetic vs regular oil. You make two statements that you don’t support: 1. Synthetic is better and 2. Synthetic will flow better than normal. According to Blackstone Laboratories (an oil testing company in Indiana):there is NO difference between synthetic and regular oil in the temperature ranges found in the lower 48 as relates to protection of an internal combustion engine. Essentially the same metals, etc. were found in engines with synthetic vs normal. Secondly, flow rates are determined by ambient temperature and viscosity, yet you say that the synthetic oil will flow faster than normal oil without clarification. Seems like you may want to check your facts against some oil analysis research and define the ambient temps and viscosities of oils when you say one flows better than the other. Cheers, Ron Coalson

  15. My MK1 originally had a power rack installed to run as a manual. I changed that out to a Flaming River manual rack and EPAS. No pump no fluid, no hoses. Something you might want to consider. Just my 2 cents. Your build is going to be great, can't wait to see the mod to the transmission tunnel.

  16. Wipers? Its a FARE WEATHER CAR DUDE! And quit saying Fairmont or I will unsunscribe and ive been with u since the purchase of the legacy wagon

  17. With recognition of the fact that this does not need to make a million bajillion horsepower to be a contender, wouldn't aluminum heads benefit the weight distribution? GT40's are a no-brainer if you're going to do anything w/ a 302 but they aren't what anybody would consider weight savers. Probably a little easier to achieve your 350+ number with I would think.

  18. Great project, and you’ve got the right guy. He knows all the details and what can be done to improve the car. I had no idea there were still unfinished MK1’s out there!
