New Mexico Trooper Wrecks Cruiser During High Speed Pursuit

On January 6, 2018 near Clovis, New Mexico two New Mexico Department of Public Safety troopers were in pursuit of a white truck that was driving recklessly and at high speed. Although DPS’ pursuit policy generally indicates that pursuits be discontinued when the fleeing driver’s evasive actions put the public at elevated risk, in this pursuit the primary trooper was still hot on the truck’s tail when its driver blew through a busy intersection, leaving the trooper without any safe options as he approached…. so he took the safest option he could find, and destroyed his cruiser.

[It is possible to calculate vehicle speed with surprising accuracy based off of highway markings in video. Approximation of the trooper’s speed just prior to his swerving – calculated in that manner – indicates that he was likely traveling in the mid-to-high-80s mph when he slammed on the brakes and went right.]

  1. If the cop that wrecked his car hadn't indulged himself in a temper tantrum of cussing, and had got out of his car and waved the other cops on, they might have caught him.

  2. Thats what happens when you pursue a vehicle that you only know about"suspicious activity" over a hundred miles an hour in heavy traffic. and you already have plate number all for suspicious a non crime! Nice job idiot.

  3. It was his own fault for being too hyped up & not paying attention to the traffic ahead focusing only on the suspect! Then says he was concerned for traffic but didnt see it til the last second! He didnt hit the brakes until the suspect almost wrecked!

  4. Trooper dived to the right in the nick of time. Although he may be facing a reprimand for failing to slow down before he was at that intersection. Needless to say: I hope the perp was picked up without incident.

  5. I'm always rooting for the getaway driver.. anyways It was exactly 60 seconds between losing sight of the car and the 2nd cruiser going after him. At 80mph that's about a 2 mile head start.

  6. Lmao donkey.. way too fast to try to make that turn, didn't even try to slow down.. the Suburban did, but not the officer trained to drive in situations like this

  7. Everyone is talking about the officer doing the right thing but wtf is wrong with the truck at the intersection, a SUV just ran a red light in front of you and you could hear the sound of the sirens, why did he kept driving like nothing

  8. I know right where this took place, props to the trooper for damage to car not a human, life, and second the 2nd trooper should of stayed in pursuit instead of asking should he go, when 1st trooper said he was 10-4. 1st trooper is a vet and knows the area, 2nd trooper is rookie and wet behind the ears and needs more time in the passenger seat and learning a few things about about staying engaged with suspect.
