Baltimore, Maryland — On February 1, 2024, at approximately 5:25 p.m., Officer Braxton Shelton with the Prince George’s County Police Department responded to an apartment in the 5100 block of Suitland Road in Suitland after receiving a 911 call from a resident for a report of a breaking and entering in-progress at their home. Upon arriving on scene, one officer entered the residence where he encountered 31-year-old Melvin Jay of Suitland and began giving him commands. During the encounter, the officer discharged his service weapon, striking Jay. Jay was pronounced dead on scene. No officers were injured. Investigators say two guns were recovered near Jay, but it’s unclear whether Jay was holding one or if the guns were his. Jay was not the original 911 caller. Police first described Jay as the break-in “suspect,” but the attorney general’s office did not identify him as such. The person who originally reported the alleged break-in was also a resident of the apartment. But it’s unclear what relationship that person has to Jay.
