Phoenix, Arizona — On December 16, 2023, Phoenix Police officers responded to several calls of an unknown trouble that developed into a man being stabbed. The unknown trouble began near 44th Street and McDowell Road. One caller provided information to 911 that her boyfriend had been stabbed with a metal stick. A police dispatcher relayed that information to officers. Officers spotted the suspect near 49th Street and McDowell Road walking in and out of oncoming traffic holding an object in his hand. Police commands were given to the suspect, but he continued to walk away while shouting back at officers.

One officer used a pepper ball launcher. The suspect continued to walk east towards a strip mall parking lot. Another officer fired his gun striking the suspect. Officers provided medical aid on scene while the Phoenix Fire Department was called. The suspect was transported to the hospital where he later died. The object the suspect was carrying was identified as a cylindrical metal object. The officer who fired his gun during this incident is assigned to the Mountain View Precinct and has approximately 6 years of service with the Department. The stabbing victim from the original call was transported to the hospital with serious but non-life-threatening injuries. No other community members were injured.

Why are they using occupied cars as "cover" from a knife? Not only putting people in needless danger, but completely ineffective. You want more areas to escape to, not to close off half your options when encountered by a knife. Do they even get training?

I don't see that as justifiable use of lethal force in any way. He wasn't following commands but he wasn't a direct threat to anybody at that point.

This one gave me pause. The guy refused to drop the weapon, His yelling was mostly intelligible, which is a bad sign – badly slurred speech can indicate intoxication. If I had to give a definitive opinion as to why the officer shot his service gun, I would say it was because the suspect had gotten as close as he had to the officer on the right of the officer that shot. He probably shot because he feared a lunge at his fellow officer, but that was quite a walk from point of contact to where the shooting occurred. I find I have to wonder why taser or .40 bean-bag wasn't tried earlier in the encounter? The officers being human were probably very much on-edge about this suspect as this was a response to a stabbing report. Of course no shooting would have happened had the suspect simply obeyed and dropped the weapon.

This one is questionable, and I usually agree with this channel a lot – He didn't run towards anyone directly with a knife, less lethal could have been used here – If you disagree, you're basically bending over backwards for the cops.
