DUI Traffic Stop Escalates into Wild Police Pursuit

On January 9, 2022, A Forsyth County sheriff’s deputy pulled over a Honda CRV for speeding and failure to maintain lane.
The officer engaged in conversation with the driver, who admitted to having consumed a single beer and attributed his erratic driving to dry hands and lotion use.
To ensure the driver’s safety, the deputy requested him to step out of the vehicle for a field sobriety test.
Despite initial cooperation, the situation took an unexpected turn when the driver resisted arrest
In an attempt to arrest the driver, the deputy deployed a Taser, but the driver managed to return to his vehicle and escape the scene.
A pursuit ensued, with the deputy radioing the vehicle’s description and initiating a chase along the highway.
Deputy managed to close the distance and executed a pit maneuver, but the driver swiftly maneuvered back onto the highway, and the chase carried on.

Coordinated efforts led to the deployment of stop sticks, aimed at deflating the tires of the fleeing vehicle.
The deployment of stop sticks was successful, deflating the suspect’s tires, but the pursuing officer also encountered the obstacle and had to come to a halt.
Ultimately, the driver’s desperate attempt to escape came to an end when law enforcement managed to corner and apprehend him.
He was charged with fleeing/attempting to elude for a felony offence, failure to maintain lane, speeding, obstruction, reckless driving, improper/erratic lane change, dui, driving while license suspended, failure to use seatbelt and unlawful use of wireless device.
