We must abolish the death penalty

According to a 2021 survey by the Pew Research Center, even though they have doubts about its administration, fairness, and usefulness as a crime deterrent, most Americans today still support the death penalty. Moreover, while it may seem like a brutal relic of a bygone era, capital punishment is still legal in 24 states, for the federal government, and for the military. As John Gramlich writes, “while state-level executions have decreased” in recent decades, “the federal government put more prisoners to death under President Donald Trump than at any point since the U.S. Supreme Court reinstated capital punishment in 1976.”

Sister Helen Prejean has spent much of her life as a Catholic nun bearing witness to the violent inhumanity of state executions and campaigning to abolish the death penalty. Her work has been recognized around the world, including by the Pope, and has been instrumental in advancing national dialogue on capital punishment and in shaping the Catholic Church’s vigorous opposition to all executions. She is also the author of Dead Man Walking: An Eyewitness Account of the Death Penalty in the United States, The Death of Innocents: An Eyewitness Account of Wrongful Executions, and River of Fire: On Becoming an Activist. In this special episode of Rattling the Bars, TRNN Executive Producer Eddie Conway sits down to speak with Sister Prejean about the barbarous injustice of state-sanctioned executions and her own path to becoming a leading advocate for death penalty abolition.

  1. In a time where every sort of weapons, smoking, drug's, alcohol and more is here too stay we need more humanity, help, too work, justice, respect, protection for all. Offering forgiveness is the same as offering false hopes and causing trouble because there's no justice in it. Any sort of death is wrong. Murder or Capital punishment either way it happens is wrong. Two wrongs don't make a right. But justice should be served and dignity people should die in prison until their last day for lifers really.

  2. God established the death penalty now and in the world to come. Oppose it, and you're opposing God Himself. Calling what God commanded wrong is speaking the language of the antichrist.
    Deuteronomy 30:19

  3. If anyone don't want to be on
Death Row don't be a Murderer..
    There are
Too Far MANY Serial Killers in
this Country who had not been caught yet..
Talk to the Families of the Victims who been KILLED by
    their Killers..
    These Victims been through
Horrors and Traumas before THEY die..
    These Killers are not Humans..
Human Being wouldn't do what these Killers do..
    Each Murder are not DONE
    by
    Human Being..
    Each Murder are DONE
    by a
    BEAST and MONSTER..

  4. NO!!
    Too Far MANY Children being
    KILLED by MONSTERS!!..
As far as this concern, the
Death Penalty needs to be in
    Every State..
    Death Penalty are Deterrent to
    Murders and Murderers..
    There's
    White On White Crimes
    Black On Black Crimes..

  5. what a joke what about the people that are no longer alive because of there bad people that commit very bad crimes I believe a life for a life bad people do bad things I believe everybody has a right to be safe what about the victims of these mass killer that you feel is unfair?????????

  6. a wrong system can never do the right thing…the black experience has not been addressed and people start making laws using wrong institutions which is how we got here

the open murderer and rapist have no cure in any law…they must die but who determines this must be humans who live like angels and we do have them

the white supremist destroyed their world led by America and now seek illegal law to preserve all just like civil rights laws were taken over by migrants , lgbt and feminist

the black experience of America must have a permanant seat of power in America just as the natives of America, with that no prisoner will miss justice

blanket laws to save all lives is a disaster …some people don't deserve to live any more and money should never protect them

what needs to be done is use science now available to ensure all who killed or jailed illegally are compensated as we fast track all in jail illegally

any person with a family whose crime is not rape or murder should not be in prison…..a justice servant from judge to prosecutor or prison worker who is found guilty for jailing illegally is death row material

  7. Too many Republican idiots to abolish it now, give it a couple more years then the Repugnant terrorists will all be gone when trump-19 finishes it's job removing them from Congress.

  8. This is not in line with correct Catholic teaching. Those found guilty beyond a reasonable doubt of the most heinous crimes have surrendered their right to life; the State then takes away the good of life. What was true 1500 years ago is true today, and always will be. The Church's teaching does not change.

  9. We shouldn't have to live with animals or support them in prisons, once they have committed such horrific crimes they need to be put down like a Mad Dogs they are❗

  10. Even if Humans do abolish the death penalty, God most certainly won't. If you believe otherwise, then you're probably already in a fix. "I offer life or death, therefore choose life" is not to be taken lightly.

  11. Thank you, Sister Helen, you TOO are the Real Thing, just like Eddie is. My love to you, sister, and as always to Eddie.

  12. https://youtu.be/NCZtTL6UdII

    I disagree with you.

The criminal underworld is very powerful and it is not to be taken lightly. I do not think the current system is just by any means, and I'm all for reform. There's also the logistics of things and the cost of the current system of social reform, and without a doubt my ideal system would be fair and just as long as the crime is not so brutal.

If this was your son, would you think these people are capable of reform?

I'm for it if executed justly

  13. You must also abolish food stamp and all social free stuff. The only free stuff should be free school compulsory till 18 (at the level of Japanese school, if most people are too dumb they learn to become janitor or else). Make the people work and become responsible for their faith and let them 100% free speech and 2A.
