Avnery was plain and simply just a good and decent human being whose humanity overrode the more base tribal allegiances that most of his fellow Israeli's have instead decided to follow. Avnery chose to be the total opposite of those who hated him and his fellow Jews in the 1930's and 40's, he wanted a truly democratic Israel, a country with morals, with empathy for others especially to a people who they'd just done a great wrong too. Instead he was reduced to a tiny minority whilst Israeli's created a state were they were first class citizens and the indigenous Palestinians second class citizens. If your a Palestinian in the occupied territories your a non citizen subjected to apartheid and racist laws as your land and natural resources are stolen by force and is for Israeli's not Palestinians. Your homes demolished to make way for Jews mostly from Russia in Jews only towns, with Jews only roads. Gaza is a giant open air prison with the prisoners mostly being children under the age of 16 with Israel keeping you on the verge of starvation, thirst from lack of water, disease from blowing up the sewage plant and the power deliberately rationed. Even medicine is rationed. Its a shame, if Israel had more people with the ethics of Avnery, Israel really would be a great nation rather than the violent, pariah, apartheid state that occupies and represses another people just so it can steal their land. No matter the propaganda or the attempts to equate justified criticism of Israel with anti-Semitism, more and more people are starting to realize what actual anti-Semitism is and see through the lies. BDS worked with S. Africa, it can work now, once Israel gives Palestinian people the same rights they have then they'll be seen in a good light.
Yes, there was a minority of Zionists in Palestine who rejected the Jewish nationalism and religious, racist bigotry that characterizes Zionism as we've know it now since well before the creation of Israel in 1948: the Zionism that "triumphed" and led to the creation of the fascist apartheid state of Israel, while using systematically terrorism, propaganda, ethnic cleansing, racism and criminal repression against Palestinians, through methods the German nazis would have admired.

The Jewish Israelis have veered really so far-right and so far away from Martin Buber's vision of a Jewish-Arab state in the 20s that it is now high time the international community condemned and stopped the Israeli apartheid state and its continual barbaric crimes against the Palestinians by applying the same sanctions that were applied against apartheid South Africa in the 80s: Boycott, Divestment & Sanctions. Israel has been for too long on a course of no return towards the horror of ethnic cleansing of the Palestinian population that their criminal policies have absolutely to be stopped without delay! BDS is the only possibility left to the international community against such a blatantly as arrogant as hypocrite as criminal bigoted state. An international commission on the crimes of Israel against the Palestinians and penal condemnation of the Israeli leaders responsible for these should also be seriously considered now.
Also note in the video how easily, on Israeli state TV, an opportunity is never missed to smear Jeremy Corbyn, here while they simply spit hatred on the death of dissident Israeli pacifist Uri Avnery !! Is it difficult to see where lies the source of Jeremy Corbyn's being constantly smeared in the UK medias, in spite of the constant support of respected dissident voices from the Jewish community, and in spite of the bare facts behind Corbyn's long political carreer he based on values situated exactly on the opposite of hatred and bigotry contained in every move of Israeli Zionism?
I'm not Jewish, so I can't pretend to be an expert, but I don't understand why one can't believe in a reasonable perspective, that the Jewish people should be able to defend their home, but not through imperialism or through dehumanizing Palestinians. It doesn't have to be mutually exclusive. I'm not sure that the term "Zionism" will ever work in a non-problematic way, but still, whatever you call it, I agree with his philopsohy.

There is not such thing as a "non-racist zionist". This person was just a Jew, intelligent enough to notice Israel wouldn't live in peace as long as they didn't enforce it. And he was right!
Even the most left wing Zionists believe in a state that can only be created via ethnic cleansing and can only be maintained by denying Palestinian rights. Non racist Zionism is simply a logical impossibility. Its like saying non racist settler colonialist white nationalists. Even the best of them, the ones who support some human rights of the others, still hold racist beliefs in their hearts.
