As a person who has been in financial services for nearly 30 years fell out of the chair listening to this about Trump and the NY AG civil case. There is no grey in this. ITS FRAUD HE AND HIS BUSINESS COMMITTED. PERIOD. FULL STOP. It’s not a victimless crime either. You and I who play by the rules would have paid significantly higher interest rates by not over-inflating our financials. If every business acted this way, there at some point t would be a major crisis.
If the argument is that it really wasn’t that big of a deal as “victimless” is complete nonsense. Remember stated mortgage loans (where you just say what your income and assets are)?? This is no different and while he had not defaulted at this juncture, if every business did what he did, the entire system could/would collapse just like the financial crisis of 2008.
Let his conviction serve as a warning to any other business entities operating and thriving by massively over inflating assets, you will/should be prosecuted. The entire financial system is based on values of assets and if everyone did this, values would not be real.
The Law is fine. When people go to buy homes they are supposed to give accurate financial information. If they give fake pay stubs and fake bank statements that make them look better than they actually are it is fraud and banks will prosecute them if the bank finds out and they can go to jail. This has happened in the past and now as well. This is the same thing Trump's company did except Trump is protected because the company as a corporation did the crime . I bought my house right after graduating from college at 21 yrs old and was making a lot of money as an engineer. I actually got a call from some guy in the fraud dept working for the bank that lent me the money for the mortgage to try to get me to say I gave them false information because they thought I was too young to be able to get a house and make that much money at the time. Nothing came of it but giving banks false information is illegal and you can end up in prison
