Arizona made "no-excuse" early and mail-in voting legal back in 1991. For decades, Arizona's mail-in voting laws were the model of ballot accessibility, making it easy for voters to participate in their elections. An overwhelming majority of Arizona voters voted early, either in person at a polling place or via mail-in ballot.
But opponents of voting rights in the Arizona House of Representatives just voted to change all that. They voted along straight party lines to pass a bill that would end early voting in the state — both in person and by mail with just a handful of exceptions for the elderly or those in military service. This sends the bill onto the Arizona Senate, possibly setting up a showdown with Gov. Katie Hobbs over a potential veto.
Vote-by-mail remains incredibly popular in Arizona, with almost 90% of ballots in 2020 cast by mail and around 75% of Arizona voters signed up to receive early ballots in 2022. But that would all drastically change.
This is bad news for Arizona voters and bad news for everyone that cares about our democracy.
