Sports betting is a tax on fans—and a ticking time bomb | Edge of Sports

It was once taken from granted that gambling and professional sports could never mix, for the sake of the fans and the integrity of the games themselves. Those days are long gone. Smartphones have made sports betting more accessible and widespread than ever—and tech companies and sports leagues are in cahoots to reap the profits. ‘Edge of Sports’ takes aim at this regressive and dangerous turn in the world of professional sports, asking what happens to the games we love when a scandal inevitably strikes.

  1. Not a tax at all. Stupid people are volunteering to give away their wealth. With a tax the government FORCES citizens to give up their wealth, Big difference between a private voluntary association and theft by government.

  2. I fail to see the big deal… speculation for the sake of profit is Amercan as apple pie. Americans have been speculating on land and company stocks forever, what makes sports entertainment especial?

  3. If you think the fix is not already in you are naive at best. Everything is a conspiracy until the truth comes out. Tim Donaghy ring a bell? The man picked so many winners the Mafia noticed. The NBA denied it was a systemic problem. I watched a commercial break stop a no huddle offense when they got inside the 20. Stop pretending it is sport…it is entertainment.

  4. As a horse player who seldom strays into other forms, I know that the return on these games is too low to warrant serious consideration. When I bet, I am making an educated guess based on the past performance of the horse and/or jockey. If I don’t like the odds I will pass and look at another race on another day even. The addiction to gambling is something that will teach you the harsh realities in life. While I was/am lucky enough to have only lost my winnings back to the tracks, others are not so lucky. Still to this day my wife asks me why I make minimum bets. My answer, ‘ I only bet horses that can return enough to cover my next few losses. It’s fun that way.’

  5. This is a Terrible take!! Half what they say is just plain wrong. Try to kill something actually bad in society besides peoples fun. Hell only fans is worse in my opinion

  6. After a series of players get caught throwing games to make cash, they won't have a choice to repeal. There was an article years ago where a journalist was invited to watch a series of sports events with a fixer in a hotel room, and every score the guy had predicted beforehand turned up, so things are already shaky.
