Nate Silver and the Pitfalls of the Corporate Pundit Class

Political statistician and editor-in-chief of FiveThirtyEight Nate Silver found himself in hot water recently when he seemed to refer to the diverse supporters of Bernie Sanders’ campaign as “residue.” Jacqueline Luqman talks to Anoa Changa about why that language, and the bias of the corporate pundit class, is an issue.

  1. There are also pitfalls to TRNN continually perpetuating a narrative that Sanders and Warren are pretty much the same thing. One of the pitfalls is people like me running from you far and fast. I let it slip the first couple times (full disclosure: I have no idea if you did it here because I didn't/won't watch it), but it was an obvious deliberate decision for you at this outlet to be doing it. It's disingenuous and gross.

  2. I think it's overhyping to worry about 'residue' because it's simply talking about the numbers. That said, he's a dick who skews everything to be "anyone but Sanders".

  3. Why does Nate Silver still have any credibility at all?? His analysis on the eve of the 2016 election was that there was an 88% chance of Hillary Clinton winning. He is FOS.

  4. Great analysis from Anoa.
I know the mainstream media and their cohorts are piling on Bernie and I know if you are Bernie supporter it is hard to push back calmly given the events of 2016 and now; that said, I encourage Bernie supporters to stick to reasoned discussions over policy, record and strategy, and not resort to ad hominem attacks or broad generalizations. Don't give these idiots any more ammunition to paint a 'Bernie Bros 2.0' narrative.
In particular, I've noticed a rapid rise in toxic engagement between Sanders and Warren supporters. I think Bernie is the better candidate (both for the general election and as potus), but I don't think that Warren, for all her flaws, is Hillary 2.0 or a 'corporate shill' or 'tool of the DNC'. And if Sanders does reach the convention with a plurality of delegates, he will need her supporters to avoid any DNC backroom nonsense. It can (and will) get more frustrating as this election cycle goes on, but keep your eye on the prize – the long game; and remember that Bernie has said himself several times to engage other people – supporters of other candidates – respectfully.
From a purely tactical point of view, Bernie and Warren need to surpass Biden first, then distinguish themselves after. Let's not fall for the corporate elitist bait from people like Nate and outlets like MSNBC & CNN.

  5. I would like to organize an alternative to the corrupt democratic party that rules Baltimore.
We need to get off this merry-go-round of corruption and ineptitude of this city government.
Complaining gives me a headache, and does not help.

  6. Great discussion! I'm willing to bet Nate is getting paid extra to spread crap. I think the internet is still very young and people have to learn how to see through the BS. For me, corporate news is the worst, but I do subscribe to some just to compare it to independent news programs such as yours. It gives me a broader view (I hope) of what is going on. I think your channel is great. Thank you.

  7. Excellent interview/discussion, Jacqueline and Anoa! It'd be interesting to know how Bernie is doing during this campaign period, to get some update(s) about this, and Nate Silver definitely seems to be a blatant idiot. It's annoying when people PRETEND to be experts on topics that they have no competence with, being OUT of their league, say. Truly intelligent people should be able to quickly realize whether they're sufficiently competent, or not. So, Nate evidently is an idiot. Never heard of him, before, and will be glad to never hear him with his bs media work. I don't follow sports, anyway.

  8. You can't put all the blame on Bernie's campaign, he doesn't take corporate money, he's grassroots which limits his resources. It's the responsibility of the citizens black, white, and whatever, to do their homework on which campaign is going to address their issues. 2016 black support was behind Clinton. I'm mean look at Symone Sanders jump ship and changed her positions like it was going out of style. So, it's up to us and we need to take responsibility for the candidates we elect.

  9. This may be an unnecessary tangent, but I think there is something to say about the idea of agent provocateurs responding as "Bernie" supporters.
I know from time to time I have had heated exchanges with some very passionate hard-Left folks; but I have also come across a number of "Sanders' supporters" who both attack a lot of folks for not being as extreme as them — while simultaneously mixing in some very blatant neoliberal talking points into their argument.
While all the Davos Dems like to constantly rail against Russian online interference, almost no one talks about David Brock and his SuperPac 'Clear the Record' (or whatever focus-grouped label they've decided to market themselves as these days.)
There is a lot of covert, deliberately misrepresented, activity going on online and in social media, which gets weaponized against Progressives in general.
Are there obnoxious, reactive, Sanders' supporters who are so tied up in their own anger and frustration that they take it out on everyone? Yep.
Are there elements in the political establishment that try and exploit that dynamic in their corporate agenda narrative?
I would suggest that the answer is: You bet.

  10. Dumb guest, as much as she talked about statistics and numbers, she presented none.
All I heard a emotional BS, coupled with BS identity politics. Smh
Just horrible, alot of hot ass air.

  11. Too much nuance, intellectual clap trap & devil in the details.
We are all one race, the human race.
Bernie is the only candidate who represents humanity & the planet. Human decency is worth voting for.

  12. I find it rather ironic that Nate Silver would complain about being annoyed by the supporters of certain candidates when he called human beings residue. I can think of a time when residue is used scientifically, but something tells me that Mr. Silver isn't educated enough in chemistry to know of that usage, let alone how to properly use it. I think this wouldn't have been such a big issue if he had simply apologized, even though what he said was egregious. The fact that he didn't only makes it more likely that this is exactly how he sees POC.

  13. Great show and interview .Nate has been a sellout hack for the establishment from day one also he described himself as a libertarian Btw I just gave Bernie 2020 a-good donation thanks for reminding me Nate
    Sincerely
    The Residue

  14. The Residue (Nate Silver), Black people need help raising their children. (Joe Biden), "African-American youth as ‘super-predators.’" (Hillary Clinton), The 1994 federal crime bill that created tough new criminal sentences and incentivized states to build more prisons.
