npr: We tracked a fake news creator to the suburbs – here is what we found (spoiler: a Democrat, with a background in political science doing "social" experiments – I highly recommend reading the article form 2016.) – in my view that explains some of the online activity (incl. the 50,000 USD spent of Facebook before the elections, and the less than 5,000 on google ads – spent by people with ties to Russia).
This was not the GRU, these were people trying to make easy money with clickbait. (Of course in total more than that was spent – but the testimony was about RUSSIAN spending – which is not the same as spending by the Russian government).
It just so happens that the crowd that likes Trump and despises Hillary Clinton are easy prey for the "wild" stories – so it was easy to make money while serving them nonsense. The stories and memes were crafted to suit their tribalism and bias. (And the right wingers are not into fact checking not even on a very basic level).
The liberal crowd does more fact-checking – well not enough, they detect some quite obvious nonsense.
But as "Russia, Russia" proves the tribalism makes the "liberals" eat up the propaganda as well – the propaganda just has to be a little more polished (and MSM is not even that sophisticated, it has become easier to compare their messages and fact check them).
The "liberal" crowd are deceived as well but with help of the "respectabel" media and the spook agencies.

The alleged Internet Research … (whatever), that Russian company advertising campaign has been long shown to be a miniscule spend that was done after the elections. The paid social media work on facebook and google was negligible: ads, paid for from RUSSIANS, not necessarily from the government – actually I think these were for-profit clickbait schemes *. the amounts were ridiculously low (FB 100k, half of it AFTER the elections, and google ads were less than 5,000 USD.
so that leaves the "trolls" in comment sections and sockuppet accounts – now that is HARD to prove. – I mean I am sure the Russian have them, like the U.S. the Germans, the Israelis or the Clinton campaign (Correct The Record) have them. I came recently across some from China (a Chinese video praising their infrastructure or about the Uygurs, they were falling over themselves in defending the government in the crackdown on Muslims. That was a tad too enthusiastic to be plausible).
Styling that as "election meddling" is childish ! – the CIA and Israel do much more to skew elections and daily political work (see Al Jazeera videos The Lobby – in the UK.

The missing word is "appears". Mueler says it appears Russians hacked the DNC servers. No evidence. Otherwise he wouldn't have qualified his statement.
