IRS says Americans failed to pay $688 billion in taxes in 2021

Americans failed to pay $688 billion in taxes on their 2021 returns, a record level, according to a new estimate from the IRS. The agency said that it is taking urgent steps to increase compliance such as auditing more high-income taxpayers as well as businesses and partnerships. Alex Raskolnikov, a tax law professor at Columbia Law School, joined CBS News to discuss how that happened.

  1. I feel that the government has failed all the taxpayers by using them for their taxes fayers of IRS and Department of Revenue has failed the taxpayers by using everybody and taking them for a ride for free money while you the rest of you don't pay your taxes gets away with not paying no tax at us or back taxes at all I feel those who don't pay their taxes needs to be put in jail for the rest of time until they pay their taxes or back taxes back to the taxpayers you have wasted enough foolish Time by lying about the taxes and where they're going we have not seen no strategy of where the tax money has headed this is misconduct of power and the use of taxpayers money

  2. The rich raises gas prices, rent, groceries and still have the audacity to tax us before we get our checks. That number is for the rich to owe. Not the hard working America people being completely taken advantage of for some lame guy in a $1,000 or more suit eating grapes on a yacht. It's time for the rich to balance the scale.

  3. You said "Americans," but you meant corporations and politicians, right? Because the average American has their taxes taken right out of their paychecks before the money even gets to them. The IRS could really streamline things by leaving the rest of us alone and just focusing on the members of Congress, the Supreme Court, and the Executive branch and all the lobbyists and corporations they are associated with.

  4. How much of that is the criminal Biden family’s? Rules for thee, but Hunter Biden gets a get out a jail for free card for his tax fraud.

  5. I would not want to pay taxes especially if their giving all of our tax dollars to Ukraine, immigrants, Israel wars and who knows what else? They just giving all our money away then our country is in debt it makes no sense we are all slaves for them to do whatever they want while corporations getting away with paying nothing.

  6. Socialism for the rich! Capitalism only works if the 'rules' are the same for everyone, greed is destroying us all.

  7. IRS complained about most American about failing to pay tax, but IRS won't say anything about Trump Financial Statement which was used to file tax. Won't you come out and say anything?

  8. No purpose I. Paying taxes when our money is not being used for our benefit. It is going to Ukraine and Israel. How about we fix the schools in the inner city, give grants to fix homes in distress, fix roads, and make beautiful infrastructure in the worst cities, or pay for free preschool.

  9. If the IRS is to become useful and efficient, it needs to be trimmed to the barest possible minimum. Tax returns need to be simplified so they take 3 or 4 minutes to complete and include zero deductions. If your gross income is in a particular bracket, you pay that bracket's designated percentage to the fed gov whether you're an individual, a church, a small business or a giant corporation.

  10. The rich people and big corporations they don’t pay taxes like working people because 95 % that Americans workers we pay 12 to 22 % in taxes but rich people they pay less

  11. I suspect that along with the 60k new agents, this is simply an effort to intimidate innocents folks to pay more taxes than they actually owe.

  12. The IRS has 87,000 new agents so that they can go door to door. Gives us all of your money we have to pay for more wars and line our pockets.

  13. Let the blame game begin. Is it the poeple or the government… Lets hire more government workers because bigger government always helps….

  14. Now we know why the republican party wants to place a hold on the money designated to the IRS! They're afraid that taxing the rich may hurt their donations so they lie to the faces of their base.
