This is really crazy. If it's true that votes for president do not matter at all in states where 40% or less of the voting public prefer a different candidate from the majority, then why bother to vote at all unless you're with the majority??

I guess the idea is that the people will vote for delegates who will vote for the president that they want? In this case, the delegates are completely useless because it's just adding an extra step between the people and the expression of their will.

Gray v Sanders ruled the Georgia Democratic Party's "County Unit System" (which was modelled on the Electoral College) violated the Fairness Doctrine in the 14th Amendment and ruled that "one person on vote" should be the rule in state legislative elections. That principle should also apply to our national elections.
I know you were trying hard to get there, Marc;-), but your guest needed to elaborate on what "constitutionally conservative" means. I don't know why he didn't, because you gave him plenty of time. I wouldn't have finally grasped his answers if I hadn't heard the basics explained more clearly on another indie channel, as follows (simply put):
a). Keeping the electors and having the states pass legislation is the easier way to get to a popular vote (though I still don't understand the role of the electors, based on your guest's explanation), and doesn't require a Constitutional Amendment;
b). A Constitutional Convention resulting in an Amendment to the Constitution could completely eliminate the Electoral College, but is much harder to do, with of 2/3 of state legislatures, or 2/3 of both houses of Congress required by Article 5 of the Constitution to amend the Constitution.

Explanation of the bill to change the EC is this: all of state's EC votes go to the candidate who gets the most popular votes nationwide. Slam dunk no pain to constitutionalists.
Abolish the electoral college entirely and don't tinker with an elitist system. Just repeal the 12th Amendment already and be done with it. What other country in the world has a system like that anyway?

What does it mean to us, tyranny by the dense population centers. Under this fellow’s plan if a small state were to vote largely in favor of one candidate but that candidate did not get the national popular vote, then his law would require the state electors nonetheless to vote against its own people.
This man obviously doesn’t understand how votes add up. His example of Indiana is falls under a popular vote states like Indiana can be completely ignored as it would be far easier to gain far more votes elsewhere no matter what side of the aisle you are on. Indiana would become basically disenfranchised from the process.
Sorry, but this is the dumbest change to the electoral college. He’s basically trying to do away with the electoral college without doing away with it. Then it becomes an unnecessary step in the process in that the electoral college makes absolutely no difference. So if by his plan the electoral college makes absolutely no difference then why have it at all?
The National Popular Vote bill (nationalpopularvote.com) is a state level law which mandates that the state's electoral votes be cast for the winner of the national popular vote. It is written in such a way that it only goes into effect when the number of electoral votes controlled by adopting states is a majority. It effectively sidesteps the electoral college, and is clearly the most likely path to electing the president by popular vote. Warren seems to be calling for a constitutional amendment and has not, as far as I know, mentioned NPV. This begs the question, is she serious about getting the president elected by popular vote, or is she just selling pie in the sky?

The electoral college circumvented the popular vote in 2016 and 2000 which gave us Trump and the disaster of 2000(George W Bush)
It's very clear, the founding fathers fancied themselves as the nobility of America; just like the British system against which they were rebelling. They reinterpreted the House of Lords, an aristocratic protection against the king, into the electoral college, to be an aristocratic protection against the common citizen. It is institutionalized classism. All governments born of the British system have it. Canada has the senate which, although it can't influence elections in the same way, acts as a filtre for all legislation. Our governments are archaic, classist and clearly disfunctional in the 21st century. The question is, why are we so slow to change them?
