We took the property tax from the urban core to build the infrastructure in the suburbs. As taxes were used to subsidize the suburbs growth, and we left the infrastructure of the urban core to deteriorate. Now that the infrastructure of the suburbs is over 50 years, the infrastructure of the both cannot be maintained. So the urban core become a blighted neighborhood. Yet we build more roads in the suburbs. We can see how the urban core looks like a refugee camp.

There should probably be more stringent oversight on the tax free status of these institutions because they seem to be working like for profit institutions. Harvard for example has enough money make its education free to all its students with just the interest on their endowment. Why don't they? why do they keep accumulating assets whose productivity can't be taxed?

Private business is a place for innovation and creating new and interesting products, but not good in operating necessary utilities as it is seen that the prices are higher and service worse in such cities.
There needs to be a higher level of income where people are required to pay taxes, such as 100K or more. Also make it a flat tax on income so it is simple for people to figure out and not have many thousands of pages of tax code. Why should a multi millionaire pay less in taxes than someone earning 50K a year?

Thank you for the program. Well informed panel and discussion. Lots I didn't know. We need to change the laws on tax exempt status. It's unfortunate that organizations that receive indirect and direct benefits from the city don't just offer to make contributions. But the wealthy are wealthy because they don't put out until they are forced to. There is no kindness or consideration in their system – we're talking "cold blood", which is why they can easily ignore the poverty around them.
Fundamentally we need to change the capitalist system that breeds inequality, austerity, racism, sexism – basically group conflict – and so many other untoward behavior.

The reason why cities died is because people don't want to work but still get paid. In a perfect world that's how it should be! The Democrats want it to be this way but the Republicans believe that you should work for what you have and that's the American way! If people don't want to work nothing will be produced so money does not exchange hands! That's where the repo man comes in and people lose what they have and get evicted!
