Colombia’s Choice: ‘Fascism’ or ‘Protest Vote Without Program’

As Colombians vote in the presidential run-off election this Sunday, they face a stark choice between the far-right/fascist candidate Ivan Duque and the center-left Gustavo Petro. Even though the center-left has enough votes, infighting could very well keep Petro from winning, says Manuel Rozental of pueblosencamino.org

  1. Unfortunately, there exists a significant amount of poor and/or exploited working class people in the cities of Colombia who are VERY uneducated, and who fall for ANYTHING as long as someone displays a simplistic "macho" personality (ala Uribe) while talking about vague concepts like "morals" (Duque did just that). This is how someone like Duque or Uribe gets votes. Colombian elites throughout their history have done EVERYTHING possible to make sure their population doesn't get educated, and they've made sure to create an effective "dog eat dog" society in the cities. Most people in the cities of Colombia have ZERO idea of the atrocities that Uribe backed business interests have committed in the country sides and to union/neighborhood organizers. Chances are that the gringo followers of Democracy Now/The Real News Network etc knows more about the crimes committed by these Colombian business interests than most Colombians in the cities do. So it's no shock that the far right gets votes. This is one of the challenges that any progressive/left movement has to overcome.

  2. Columbia has been run by the US for how long now? I wonder how long it'll take for the Christian-political right to take over every nation on the planet.

  3. Excellent interview/discussion, and I'm glad to have taken the time to check out this piece, for I nearly didn't. South America, so Latin America + Brazil, and other countries, has become of serious interest since the 1990s, at which time I finally began to pay a little attention to politics. Anyway, thanks for this update about Colombia.

  4. Center Left in Colombia is the ultra Left in the United States. Center Left in Colombia just means not Left enough to be pick up an AK47 and shoot a soldier in the face. Even the "ultra left" in the US isnt a proper translation. The ultra left in the US is just some nerd hopped up on starbucks coffee. Petro is like an actual genius on the level of Stephen Hawkings coming into politics.

  5. I'm afraid the current generations need to remember what democracy actually is, one person one vote, whoever you are, or how rich or poor you are. The population then goes with the majority vote and that's democracy. Calling others fascist might make you feel better but if the population votes them in on a regular basis it's the democratic choice of the population.
