China Has Strategic Objectives In Going Global, Does Africa?

If Africa as a continent does not have strategic objectives of its own, the history of impediments to African economic development will be repeated in its engagement with China, says Ethiopia’s Alemayehu Geda

  1. I agree with Dr. Geda. African countries probably need more protectionism to develop their productive industries beyond commodities. When we tax everything else, why do we want all international trade to be untaxed? Pursuing rapid growth with free trade and the lowest taxes possible is the global race to the bottom. It exacerbates inequality, corruption, bubbles and collapses.
Unlike other developing countries, Africa has not been able to use protectionist monetary policy (debt) as successfully as other countries apparently because the governments and banks have always been too corruptible by that great power, or at least too fallible. But without the ability to use monetary policy or other government policies, it seems obvious Africa should use protectionist tariffs like other developing countries have used to develop industries.
Even in America, who is the country who has done the most to promote free trade, free trade has fueled Walmart and Amazon's rise to dominate retail while undermining the labor market while productive industry other than oil has been in perpetual decline for the past 60 years. When free trade isn't even good for America, the country with the most economic power, how could it be good for anyone else?

  2. Do you how we fought for the right to develop national industry out of western control 100 years ago? It's 4 May 1919, we started a revolution, and it took 30 years for us to win an independent China with own administration of Customs.

You are much luckier than us these days~

  3. For Mr. Geda: about the challenges you mentioned, there is a Chinese saying that “Don’t run before you learn walking”. Africa has been a no hope land under the grip of the West for many many years. Now that African people start to see their future on the horizon, let the African people work, gather their wealth and trade experience before they sit down to negotiate with the new challenges. China is an ancient civilization country. They know too well of a win-win trade would bring them a long and stable investment return, so African people should give themselves a chance to gain knowledge first.

  4. Oscar's been left out of the trade Community because the US does not want them trading. The most fertile soil on Earth the best place to grow teas and coffees and they're not allowed to trade.

  5. Africa is a continent, composed of many nations, many peoples. I wish media would try harder not not lump them into one label.

  6. Rockefeller ,Rothschild ,Skull and Bones just doing what they did to Germany and Russian in 1917 and WW2. Destroy, steal gold wealth patents, cause migration of the smartest ,best minds to America. Control the earth from America. Now Destroy America to self sustaining stable said Khazar Rockefeller. De-industrialize more wealth ,steal patent ,ideas, send the Communist China which was invented by Yale skull and Bones. America destined to be Cuba the model created by Rockefeller, CFR ,CIA for the USA.Destroyed ,medival

  7. The Western came only to colonize and rob the resources from Africa. Hope that China is different from the Western & can provide a win win development path for Africa.

  8. Better China than AFRICOM. Nation states are not a development. They are a failure of western culture and the cause of so much havoc in the world. They have to same rules of gangs with their territories. Africa's freedom of movement was due to be the oldest developed people. Now even the animals of Africa are not free to move on the continent. They are imprisoned in wildlife reserves. Capitalism and its currency is another imprisonment. Still the coming of China means no war, conflict, genocides, regime changes, military intervention, colonialism. I agre, a united continent is needed and not the division into colonialism's concept of countries.

  9. Only western treat prosperous Africa as a threats to them.we belive that someday a prosperous Africa will be more contribute to human beings .

  10. Smart man. The most significant quote to black peoplle around the world…. Stop with this Democracy sh^$ in the context of bowing to american capitalism/ I mean whatever we say ism, therefore a developing nation especiallly the continential Africa with our history must guide the markets, just as america did and still does manipulating theirs while they try to stop china from doing it. This is why china is a greayt example. Okay, most of that was my interpretation of his actual quote, "You must direct the market" after he showed america have been doing it since its exception. That's why no foriegn company should be allowed 51% ownership and a technology transfer should be automatic. America/west 600 years of evil demands this. China was smart in doing this considering its history wit the west and now look.

  11. We have to also discuss the land and water pollution in the mineral mines managed by Chinese companies…in addition to China giving out loans that are difficult for these countries to pay back.

  12. NATO countries has been trading with Africa through the barrel of a gun for ages, has Africa benefited? China just wants to trade w/out meddling in internal politics, yet Africa is now all of a sudden up in arms?

  13. Africa is the Future.. There are vast amounts minerals and resources all over the continent! I am currently in the process of starting a mobile phone manufacturing company in one of the provinces rich in all the materials it takes to make said Mobile.. It’s a no brainer, invest in Africa people, The Chinese see it.
