  2. Tell the stories about the kids assaulting teachers and staff workers! That is why there are so many police. Police may I remind you that aren’t allowed to carry a firearm. So, you tell me how the police can’t even protect the school against an active shooter like at Frederick Douglas. The Baltimore City School System is corrupt as hell! My sister lives in the city and she used our parent’s address in Baltimore County so her children didn’t have to go to the city schools. Students are hurting students, fact.

  11. Truth! 20 yrs ago, I taught in SW Philly for 3 years – pernicious environment. First grader cried during reading group – her "stepfather " got shot / killed going to corner store. I was the only safe adult in her life but I had 39 other kids to care for. Fortunately, I was 50, re-entry so I had skills & compassion but even I quit after 3yrs. Impossible situation plus I went broke!

  12. TRNN: Excellent interview. The situation is very sad for the youth; sad and tragic. Hopefully, some good actions, including from govt, will happen in order to provide very good, even great, improvements. It clearly needs to happen. When teachers are in a situation like described happening in Baltimore and they personally feel the need to invest of their own income to try to help the students, then the situation is what, if not dire?! It's desperate! It shouldn't need to be happening, and it doesn't need to be happening, but the population of youths in the city apparently is abandoned, which is awfully sad. "School of hard knocks"!, very difficult. I had difficulties when young due to bullies, but it wasn't common as it evidently is in Baltimore. Shame!, on the state and the city for not providing adequately for these youth; SHAME! But, at the same time, the teachers who try to do their best in all of this situation merit praise. Afaik, high school teachers in the US definitely don't earn high incomes. I did a college diploma in Pure & Applied Sciences from 1981 to 1984 and one of the first math teachers, a very good and helpful one, I had was originally from the USA; actually him and his wife both were from the USA (maybe due to the bs Vietnam War draft in the US, but I didn't ask for the reasons). After I had followed his courses for plenty of months he invited me to his office, so of course I went, and he asked if I'd be interested in seeing a comparison between the average starting incomes of teachers in the US and Canada, or certainly in the province of Quebec anyway. Well, of course. He showed me the comparison and teachers in Quebec weren't highly paid, but seeing what those in the US got, and NYC was the comparison, and pretty much everyone knows that living in NYC is EXPENSIVE, it's enough to make a person feel sick. The avg starting income for teachers in NYC schools was like around $13,000 to $14,000 per year, whereas in Quebec, it was around $23,000/yr, and Qc had "free" healthcare, universal healthcare provided by the govt, which we all knows pays for such costs using taxes forcibly levied against working people; plus, of course, various sales taxes. Nonetheless, cost of living was definitely less in Qc, much lower than in NYC. Well, if teachers, who usually, if not always, are university-graduated, were paid this little when teaching in NYC, then …, I wonder about the rest of the USA. Praise, to the teachers who're truly dedicated to doing the best they can! That of course includes Daniel Parsons, who definitely seems to be such a dedicated teacher and provided an excellent TRNN interview. And, keep up the excellent work TRNN. You've been doing it for plenty of years now, have a very good team, ….

  23. In 2017, Baltimore City receives the 2nd highest funding in Maryland at $16,942 per student. Conversely, the students in Baltimore County only get $14,462.

    The state approved millions for repairs in Baltimore City Schools. The school district ended up sending millions back to the state because they didn't follow the rules. https://www.baltimoresun.com/news/maryland/education/bs-md-ci-schools-money-returned-20180104-story.html

    The District is mismanaged and needs a shake up at the top. There is no excuse for sending repair funds back to the state. More money won't fix it if the school district can't even use the funds correctly.

    Everything starts at home. When education is valued by the family then education will be valued by the kids. Baltimore City has had horrible results for decades so today's parents are the students failed by the district historically. These patents need to know they were failed and must demand better for their kids.

  27. Big city policies are doing what it is designed to do to keep black families from thriving while others leap frog them, set up businesses in their communities and call the shots.

  28. Dharna Noor & this teacher are proof that great people can come out of a troubled city. I wish I had something to offer to help the situation in Baltimore, but I hope that someday I will.
    I am working on creating an educational program designed for those with minimal resources to learn software development skills, including writing, and communications.
