Google assistant is much better
DON'T get Gemini yet! It does NOT perform basic Assistant tasks (Spotify, Maps, alarms, etc.) It just cripples your phone.

Not compatible with android 11. That's what my Galaxy s10 has that it won't work with. And updates are blocked since june 2001. I was supposed to be able to get Android 12 on it and is why i bought it. Was supposed to be Verizon model when i got from Walmart website. But nope they screwed me over because my phone is an unrooted unlocked model. Not one update since brand new and nox hasn't been tripped. Funny on launch day it lets you install but not use that app.
So im using shortcut maker by Rushikesh.
After installing if you don't want shortcut arrow or to see ads. Close the app. Open your widgets find shortcut maker. Slide over over 1 to the arrow.
Select website. Before you do this copy the address if you don't want to type it. Make sure your logged in first too. Anyway if you had the app installed but it says not available because you installed it on launch before the update blocked the app. You can go to select an icon and system icons and select the actual app icon. I name mine Gemini Web. I also select the web browser to use because i have both chrome and Firefox. As long as you don't log out you have a nice icon shortcut without a shortcut arrow. Only thing is you have an address bar at the top because it only launches your web browser and nothing else. The app makes shortcuts to other apps and system functions too. I use it instead of installing all the news apps. I'm just using it free and keep notifications blocked.
All they've done in the UK is get rid of the assistant. No Gemini.
Just swapped to Gemini. It looks like it can't do Google assistant tasks, just information searching. I only tried timers, but it just sends to information on setting timers, not setting a timer itself
An irreversible decision: If we choose Gemini route, we can't get the assistant back.
Please let Google Gemini department know I tried the free Google Gemini app but it does not handle play some music. It does not know my music service like Google YouTube music. Could you please test if you get the same results or not.

I was able to install Gemini apk from ApkMirror. And, setting up Gemini took less than a minute. And, the gestures for triggering google assistance earlier are also working now, but the UI is replaced with Gemini.

Not currently working in the UK for me, Also does this mean assistant will eventually be replaced on all my devices… As it seems silly to divide the user experience 🤔

Chat Gemini is just so dumb. They sell us as so perfect and advanced but just talk with it, it s just sooooo dumb! It just a "mirror bot" mirroring what it sees, that s all.

Because they're testing different glitches We all know that maybe in 2 or 3 years. Eventually, that AI is replacing Google Assistant.
Gemini is the new google assistant, they are just testing the waters for now. Google Assistant will probably be gone soon.
Some of the decisions this company makes are mind-boggling to me!
