Independence-class Littoral Combat Ships (LCS) Short Overview

B-roll footage featuring the Independence-variant of Littoral Combat Ships (LCS) of the United States Navy.

A littoral combat ship is either of two classes(the Independence-class and the Freedom-class) of relatively small surface vessels designed for operations near shore by the U.S. Navy.

The design for Independence is based on a high-speed trimaran. The concept was to create a small, fast, stealthy surface, modular mission capability, maneuverable ships capable of high defense capacity in the littoral. The 418-foot (127 m) surface design requires a crew of 43 sailors. The ship is easy to reconfigure for different roles due to its modular design, the LCS will be able to replace slower, more specialized ships.
