How to QUIET a squeaky belt

Belt squeal, squeaky belt, or belt noise? Learn how to quiet a squeaky belt in your car.
I show you how to temporarily quiet the belt using WD40 so that you can drive to the parts store without the annoying squeal. The serpentine belt in your car powers the accessories such as air conditioning, power steering, the alternator, fan, and waterpump. There are three types of serpentine belt wear, pilling, glazing, and abrasion. Pulley wear will cause your pulley to squeak. A worn out pulley bearing or a worn spring in the tension pulley can also cause squeaking.

  1. DO NOT spray your belt with WD40!!!! The only reason why you could spray your belt with WD40 is if you KNOW your belt is the cause of the squeak. If you don’t know where the squeak is coming from DON’T do it. WD40 will cause the rubber on the belt to decay and rot faster. If you know the belt is the issue and you’re going to replace it asap after the fact then this is an okay option. Personally I would rather use a bar of soap on the bottom ribs of the belt or a deodorant stick. Preferably bar soap. You may have to apply the soap more often than the deodorant stick but the deodorant stick has more potential to collect dust on your belt.

  2. I fixed mine using degreaser, but that was because I dropped a lot of steering fluid onto it, the belt was good so if you have oil in the belt, use degreaser

  3. Definitely don't put lubricant on a belt that isn't supposed to be slipping. This is horrible advice and a great way to have the belt wear faster or slip

  4. WD40 is a ok. But best thing I found is applying a small amount of Dielectric grease to the v-groove in few spots. Even a new belt will squeak sometimes when installed. Dielectric grease is the best thing I found and works instantly and lasts for several months.

  5. Bro i just want to know what wd40 that can stop squeking noise… theres so much option… WD-40 Belt Dressing, WD-40 Multi Use Production And WD-40 Silicone

  6. I'm just hoping I can temporarily fix it so I can save up for a mechanic, I'm sure this is going to cost hundreds and hundreds of dollars to replace

  7. Sure, spray a flammable solvent on your engine and cause long-term damage to electrical connectors and make a sticky mess. Just replace the belt folks, there is no short term solution that is a good solution.

  8. So i recently had a serpentine belt change and I hear squealing from a belt. I originally thought the belt was too loose, so the garage tightened it (and all other belts), however issue still persists. I then go to thinking if its a pulley, which I still suspect might be, but this video gave me pause to maybe it is simply needing a bit of WD40. My squeak is not as severe as in the video and only happens at low revs or while turning so I suspect it could just be that.

  9. The belt I had on my car looked really worn out, but it wasn’t squeaking. I put a new belt on and a new belt tensioner and now it’s squeaking

  10. Don’t use regular WD40. WD40 is a water displaced and has a small lubricating ability but It will attract dust and dirt and make the situation worse , WD40 and others make a specific product (belt dressing) that is much more appropriate.

  11. WD-40 will destroy your belts don’t use the chemicals breaks the belt down it might stop the noise but it’s a temporary fix bandaid find the real issue and fix it

  12. I have tried wd40, silicone spray and candle. Wd40 works for 1 day only. Noise comes back after 1 day. Silicone spray same as well. However, by rubbing candle onto the belt and let the wax melt into the belt while idling, works like a charm!! It has been many days already and the belt is quiet and never reapplied the candle except that one time. Cheaper and works. Will replace belt soon but this buys me more time to shop online and wait for delivery. Try it. Only cost pennies.
