After some mild diagnosis on my Flood Salvage E46 BMW M3 I thought we were going to have several small electrical issues that would take a long time to repair. After reading a shop manual, and some support articles I traced my alternator wires and couldn’t believe what I found! The previous owner completely misdiagnosed the issue, and sold this car cheap because he couldn’t figure it out!

  1. When they painted the car under the hood, they pulled the engine. My guess is that's when the loose connection occurred. Body guys aren't mechanics…

  2. If you're working on Valeo alternators and the bearing is good, just order the voltage regulator itself. You can get an OEM Valeo regulator for about $40.

  3. He deserved to pay out the ass to get it fixed, smh , the damn broke guys can't find deals and get lucky but this guy does and makes out all the time, see, that's how life is, this cornball with money gets lucky and the poor guys don't, just fucked up and not fare

  4. It's not just about saving weight. It's about making sure weight is balanced. They have to make the front as light as possible to make up for all the heavy things in the front.

  5. I went through 4…. 4! Brand new (not remand) alternators on my 07 335i from AutoZone before I got a remand from O'Reilly Auto that worked. The AutoZone alternators were manufactured in China and the O'Reilly alternator was remanufactured in Mexico. Been working great for almost a year now.

PS: I did try to get the new alternators tested before going through the trouble of installing them but AutoZone didn't have the capability of testing and alternator with a clutch on it. At least my local store didn't.

  6. Oh interesting. I definitely would have gone for the alternator as well. Buy a new one and sell the old one online. Your friend here is the voltage meter. I had a cable connection problem that caused a misfire on a E90.
