  1. What about hybrid? Installing a stout diesel genset with electric drive? You could potentially extend the range quite a bit…but still….electrical energy storage (I.e. batteries) will always be the weakest link until we figure out something better…..too bad, because electric motors are badass and they have so many cool application possibilities….
** I should add, I’m a commercial towboat captain, I push barges around for a living. A few weeks ago I moved the first all electric Tug boat (built for ship assist work). One of the design engineers rode with me as I pushed it from the dry dock in Mobile Alabama to their company dock. I asked him about the batteries and what expectations they had….it wasn’t very promising. The weight of the batteries was over a third of the vessels gross weight and under any kind of work, they didn’t think it would make 12 hours…which is why they have some serious generators on board.

  2. You missed another option, diesel electric like a hybrid witch gives more options eco mode or flat out, plus later with upgrades on future battery chemistry to come

  3. Was considering converting my Sea Ray 270 with twin 350's to electric. But like you – after I did the numbers it made no sense. BTW at 35 knots WOT I'm burning 35 GPH. Oh God it hurts! I cruz at 30 MPH burning 19 GPH. It's actually almost as efficient as 5 MPH. Once your on top things get efficient.

  4. There are large cruisers around that use electric motors with solar panels, never need to charge from shore power, but of course they do not run at full speed all of the time.
If you just want a high speed toy to play with, I guess you have to go diesel.

  5. You have really thought this out! I like the idea of repairing the existing diesels. Gasoline engines in a non-racing boat sounds silly. The electric idea is most attractive to ME, but… I'd try to investigate the idea of using two or three Tesla battery packs per electric motor to increase the range. Enjoy whatever choice you make. Don't sweat anything about this. Heaven knows YOU'VE sweated enough about a lot more important things in your life. Relax and enjoy living! ❤

  6. Regarding Tesla battery, you friend was correct in quoting you the total amount of energy of a gallon of gas, but one thing he neglected to factor in is that a gas engine runs at about 50% efficiency, so can only transform half of that energy to the Prop, while a Tesla motor runs at 90% efficiency, So you would get almost twice as much energy to the prop as what you calculate (1.8X), still not great, but better.

  7. Keyword: solarpanels! check out the tech/specs on the new 45-50 foot e-propulsion catamarans! Slowed down to 7 knots, they will run..forever – without needing shorecharging! Kid u not! You'll probably need to cover your foredeck + some custombuild bimini-style open "hardtop", for sufficient surface..check em' out

  8. I'd go Electric, with a Generator. The Generator, when running allows you to go further and a little faster… While also charging your Batteries at the same time. Then you switch back to all Electric for Silent, but slower Fuel Free Cruising. Your Fuel Costs will drop significantly.Full disclosure, I have not done this yet, but have done extensive research. Elco Electric Motors might have the perfect solution for one of your viewers, as I'm sure by now you've done whatever your going to do with your boat.

  9. I'm curious about trawling with a Tesla backup engine/ battery…
    So,
It would be great to see if it's possible…

Keeping main diesel to charge Tesla battery while trawling… 6nt-7nt

  10. Maybe running an electric motor in tandem with diesel would work, definitely cutting down on fuel and emissions. The issue is battery packs aren't quite there, both in price and size. You'd probably need two Tesla semi truck 500 kwh battery packs to make it worth it I'm guessing. But then have to deal with the insane amount of charging time and finding a safe place to put them. I'm assuming your $100k Tesla batteries are fucked if water gets into the bilge

  11. great video! question, when you looked at electric, did you recalculate performance eliminating 2 super heavy engines and huge fuel tank, and the engines related stuff, exhaust fan, transmission, etc… So, very cool video and thinking out of the box!

  12. And what is the weight of 1 Tesla pack? Okay… so, add 4 packs per motor, with jet drive, hydro-foils, and a solar roof, you could extend your power, range, and efficiency by a great margin.

  13. Buy and upgrade diesel engines , today they are better and more efficient , I did a swap and love it , more reliable and efficient for sure , I use Steier marine engines , if the Navy use them already pass all kinds of test .

  14. You tried to take the yacht to sea,
But she said no no no,
    She acted all bad,
    You got all sad,
    That blow ow ows.
You put in all that time,
To give her such a shine,
You tried to take the yacht to sea,
    But she said NOPE.

  15. Diesel is a Nightmare : with a big-block 454 chevy you can spend $1,500 on spare parts ( any and all parts that may Typ. break )
do that with a diesel and ur at about $7 -8,000 Min (fuel and water pumps, alternators, starters etc…)

  16. PACCAR MX13 Engines, It puts out 510Bhp and 1,850 Torque's, these things are built to last and pull big weight, I'm sure you could find 2 wrecked W900's with Engine in tact, Man 2 of them suckers with turbo & cam upgrades boosted to 625 BHP would be a beast

  17. I think you would be better off just rebuilding the motors that came out of the boat than to pay more for new motors or putting gas motors in it stick with the original engines

  18. For now, rebuild the engines and sell the boat for the next project:

I have seen incredible things from Silent Yachts, with their electric catamarans.

Maybe save the electric idea for a next project with a catamaran overhaul.

I would love to build this, when I have the resources.

  19. You need to look at industrial engines, they will be rated to run continuously @ a given RPM and torque. These engine are usually used in generator applications. Your buddies at Texas speed should be aware of these types of engines. Your 903’s have backup systems to detect and reduce power with overheating or low oil pressure shut downs. As well as low voltage or high voltage situations. Any gasoline engines would need to be protected in the same manner.
The Tesla idea is pretty cool in theory, but as you said it would be like a trolling motor, unless you could get the semi battery/ motor setups. I’m not sure Elon is ready to sell you two. Also a solar power system would be very helpful. But there again a huge system would be needed. Probably not enough roof area to make it viable. Just my thoughts.

  20. I think you should do both just to see the comparison, how else will you know for sure what it feels like.
Here's a thought about the Tesla thing, add it to the diesel or gas engines no matter which way you choose.
It's application would be like on demand turbo charger for the fuel engines. Run some solar panels and you have a great way to have fun. Not to mention unique content for YouTube.
