On February 14, 2021, Doraville police swiftly responded to a call at a Burlington store in Doraville, Georgia, reporting a theft involving two males attempting to make off with various items. Upon arrival, officers managed to detain one of the suspects just outside the store. However, the other managed to evade capture, fleeing the scene.
The detained suspect was searched, leading to the recovery of the stolen items. When questioned about his accomplice, he disclosed that they had recently crossed paths, lived in the woods, and that his associate was armed.
The Burlington store’s surveillance footage corroborated the theft, providing a clear picture of the incident. Consequently, the first suspect was arrested and charged with theft by shoplifting.
As officers prepared to transfer the suspect to jail, a Burlington employee provided an unexpected twist to the situation. She informed them that a second suspect had been spotted on the surveillance cameras, absconding with a pair of shoes and a hat.
Assisting officers quickly received a description of the second suspect and initiated a search in the vicinity. A few minutes later, they identified a suspect matching the description not far from the store. When questioned, the suspect attempted to flee but was apprehended by a determined officer, resulting in a brief struggle. Additional backup arrived promptly, and the second suspect was arrested.
Despite vehement denials of theft and claims that a backpack containing a firearm did not belong to him, the suspect was taken into custody. He asserted that he was merely holding it for someone else. He was subsequently transported to the Dekalb County Jail and charged with theft by shoplifting, obstruction of law enforcement officers, and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.
