On March 12, 2024, Flagler County Sheriff’s office responded to a call about shoplifting at the Palm Coast Landing shopping center.
Witnesses reported seeing three suspects, all wearing surgical masks, stealing merchandise from Bath & Body Works and TJ Maxx.
Upon arrival, deputies spotted two females matching the suspects’ descriptions exiting a store with overflowing shopping bags.
When the deputies activated their emergency lights, the women ran towards a waiting white Toyota Sedan.
The driver, identified as Gerald Jenkins (28), also from Jacksonville, ignored commands to stop and recklessly reversed the vehicle, nearly striking both a deputy and a bystander’s car.
The vehicle, with its license plate obscured by a surgical mask in a further attempt to evade capture, sped away, where another deputy spotted it and gave chase
Deputies deployed tire deflation devices, but the fleeing car swerved to avoid them before finally plunging into a water retention pond next to a gas station.
All three occupants were apprehended without further incident.
A subsequent search of the submerged vehicle revealed stolen goods from the two Palm Coast stores, along with merchandise and shopping bags from numerous other retailers.Additionally, deputies found a device used to defeat anti-theft tags.
The total value of the stolen merchandise from Palm Coast stores amounted to just over $1,836, with a significant portion consisting of candles from Bath & Body Works.
All three arrestees face a variety of charges. Jenkins, the driver, had outstanding warrants for his arrest in three Florida counties, is being held without bond.
Wright, on probation for a previous retail theft conviction, and Gailyard, who also had an active warrant, are currently being held on bond.
