Phoenix, Arizona — On June 28th, 2023, Phoenix Police received several emergency calls of a domestic violence situation in the neighborhood of 19th Avenue and Buckeye Road. The callers indicated a man was assaulting a woman in the area. One of the callers said she saw the man punching the victim then grab a hold of the victim by the neck forcing her back into an apartment. Two officers arrived at the complex and one officer spoke with the man, identified as 26-year-old Juan Reynoso, while the other officer spoke with the woman and a witness.
Officers learned Reynoso assaulted the victim and attempted to handcuff Reynoso. However, he resisted and took off running. After a short foot pursuit, one officer saw Reynoso pick up a gun from the ground and ordered him to put it down. Reynoso did not comply. It was at this time both officers fired their duty guns at Reynoso. Following the shooting, officers carried Reynoso to Phoenix Fire personnel who then took him to the hospital where he did not survive his injuries. The gun displayed by Reynoso was found on the ground next to him. It turned out to be a pellet gun resembling a semi-automatic handgun.
