On April 12, 2023, Chamblee police officers responded to a delicate situation at HomeTowne Studios in Chamblee, Georgia, involving the Georgia Division of Family & Children Services (DFCS).
DFCS had arrived to take custody of a baby from a mother facing health issues who was deemed unable to provide suitable care for her child.
With a dependency removal order in hand, DFCS requested police assistance in case the situation escalated.
When DFCS knocked on the door and explained the purpose of their visit, the mother resisted, adamantly refusing to surrender the baby.
Despite DFCS’s explanation, she insisted that she was mentally sound and fully capable of providing for her child’s needs.
As the situation reached an impasse, officers were required to intervene.
They attempted to reason with the mother, emphasizing the court order and the necessity of compliance.
However, her refusal persisted, leaving officers with no choice but to consider a forced entry.
Officers made the difficult decision to forcibly remove the baby from the mother’s custody.
Emergency medical services were promptly called to ensure the well-being of the mother.
Meanwhile, the father of the child arrived on the scene and engaged in heated arguments with the officers.
Despite his protests, officers clarified the legal basis for their actions and provided necessary documentation.
Following the intense standoff, the mother was evaluated and cleared by E.M.S.
However, based on her resistance to comply with the custody order, she was placed under arrest and charged with interference with custody and obstruction of law enforcement officers.
She was subsequently transported to Dekalb County Jail
