Bell Gardens, California — On June 22, 2023, at 4:31 a.m., a deputy assigned to East Los Angeles Station was driving his patrol vehicle approaching the intersection of Eastern Avenue and Florence Avenue in the city Bell Gardens. The deputy observed the driver of a vehicle, later identified as 45-year-old Jesus Cerda, performing “circular†maneuvers in the middle of the intersection. The deputy drove his patrol vehicle into the intersection to warn and block oncoming traffic. Cerda deliberately rammed his vehicle into the deputy’s patrol vehicle.
While the deputy was seated in the driver’s seat of his patrol vehicle, Cerda reversed and continued to intentionally ram the driver’s side of the deputy’s patrol vehicle. As Cerda proceeded to ram the patrol vehicle three additional times, a deputy-involved shooting occurred. Cerda was struck by gunfire and stopped his vehicle in the intersection. Cerda was detained by responding deputies and medically treated by Los Angeles County Fire Department paramedics. Cerda was transported to a local hospital where he was treated for his injuries. The deputy was also transported to a local hospital for injuries he sustained during the incident.
