Monona, Wisconsin — On Thursday, June 29, 2023, around 9 p.m. Monona police officer Andrew Hoffman tried to pull over a vehicle without any plates when police say the driver sped away, leading officers west down the Beltline and off multiple exits. The driver, a 20-year-old from Madison, eventually ended up on Park St., where a deflation device deployed by police struck one of his tires. He exited the vehicle while it was still in drive with a handgun and ran. His car collided with a officer Andrew Hoffman, who was briefly crushed between his own car and the suspect’s. Officer Hoffman pushed through letting K-9 Jakko out to chase down the suspect on foot. The suspect attempted to carjack during the pursuit according to Hoffman’s partner. Jakko caught the suspect, who had previously been convicted of illegal gun possession and had two active warrants at the time he was arrested. The suspect tossed a handgun toward officers after K9 Jakko bit him, which police realized after reviewing video of the incident more thoroughly. Officer Hoffman who was struck by the suspect was treated and released from a local hospital.
