In a tragic incident on September 4, 2022, a head-on collision between two SUVs in Atlanta, Georgia, resulted in a young child being injured and a mother facing multiple charges, including DUI and child endangerment.
Chamblee police officers swiftly responded to the scene of the collision between a Nissan and a Kia SUV. Upon arrival, they immediately noticed a little girl in a car seat without proper restraints and showing visible signs of distress. Recognizing the urgency of the situation, an officer quickly contacted emergency medical services (EMS) for immediate assistance.
As the officers assessed the wreckage, they detected a strong smell of alcohol emanating from the vehicle. Another officer corroborated the observation, confirming the presence of alcohol in the car. It raised suspicions that the female driver, believed to be the child’s mother, was under the influence of alcohol at the time of the crash.
Concerned for the well-being of both the child and the driver, the officers decided to conduct a breath test using a breathalyzer. The driver consented to the test. The officers allowed her to accompany her injured child to the hospital for medical attention.
After further investigation and examination of the evidence, including the breath test results, law enforcement took decisive action. The driver was subsequently arrested and charged with a litany of offenses, reflecting the seriousness of the incident. The charges included possession of an open container of an alcoholic beverage, serious injury by vehicle, child safety restraint violation, driving without a valid license, cruelty to children in the first degree, endangering a child by driving under the influence of alcohol, DUI, and driving on the wrong side of the road.
The arrested mother was transported to the Dekalb County jail, where she will await legal proceedings regarding her alleged involvement in the DUI crash. Authorities are dedicated to ensuring the safety and welfare of the injured child, who will receive ongoing medical attention and support.
