Fresno, California — The Fresno Police Department released body camera footage from the officer-involved shooting that happened on Jan. 13, 2022. Authorities have identified the man who was fatally shot by police officers in downtown Fresno on Thursday afternoon as 34-year-old Edgar Morfin Mendoza. On Jan. 13, officers were called to the Meux Home Museum near R and Tulare streets just after 12:00 p.m. following reports of someone pacing frantically outside. Upon arrival, police say they found multiple windows broken, the front door of the museum open and the suspect, inside the building. In the video, two officers can be heard telling Mendoza to “lay down” and to “get on the ground.” One officer can be heard in the video telling Mendoza that they’re going to tase him if he doesn’t comply. Mendoza then “threw a punch” at one of the officers, resulting in that officer deploying his taser. Mendoza is seen pulling the prongs out of his body before grabbing a hammer on the bench next to him and then running at officers with the hammer raised. Officers can be heard in the video telling Mendoza to drop the hammer before multiple rounds are fired at him. Authorities say Mendoza was later pronounced dead at the scene.

  1. That hammer should have been removed from that bench by the rookie when the female officer was speaking to him. He had the opportunity to remove that. That's what experience does. The police academys suck so much in this country, they teach such basic stuff and the fto's can't do everything.

  2. The male officer needs to stay with the female and learn a few things….okay, a lot of things. His verbal commands were weak as hell. He let the man get way to close. He was way too slow moving from non-lethal to lethal once he saw the minimal effect of the taser. He tried to one-hand his weapon resulting in a jam from limp wristing it and he was slow to clear it. Several seconds went by instead of doing it immediately. That's why they call it 'immediate action'. He seemed almost shy the entire time. The female cop was sure in her actions, and moved around each corner leading with her weapon. Her commands were authoritative, but were not loud and panicky. And she shot only the necessary rounds to stop the threat.

It's unfortunate she had to shoot the man, but he left her no choice.

  3. The cop with the taser needs re- training , he let him get way too close , his partner had to bale him out . If her firearm malfunctioned they'd both be in a world of hurt !!!!!

  4. I dont know if Fresno trains their cops to give play by play over the radio…but that was pretty dangerous on her part. Do your job and then get on the rover. Their backup was coming. The male officer needs to step up his command presence. Glad they didnt get hurt.

  5. I regret that the Officers now have to deal with another scumbag that wants to take things that do not belong to him and are willing to attempt to harm the Officers. Now they have to deal with having to using deadly force and take a life. Officers, thank you for protecting us.
