Maryville, Tennessee — On Thursday, February 8, 2024, Blount County Sheriff Deputy Shelby Eggers, 22, is seen In split-screen body camera footage pulling over and approaching 42-year-old Kenneth DeHart. Deputy Eggers tells DeHart that he had been driving on the wrong side of the road, to which he replies that he was busy tying his hair up and didn’t notice. He said he was driving back home after attending a high school sports game for his son, and later told Deputy Eggers he was in his grandmother’s car after leaving his truck at home. He gives Deputy Eggers a document when she asks for the vehicle’s registration, and she walks back to her cruiser as he searches for documents about the car’s insurance. Back at the cruiser, she calls Deputy Greg McCowan, 43, about the traffic stop. Deputy Eggers got back out of the cruiser, approaching DeHart. Deputy Eggers asks DeHart several times to exit the vehicle, saying she suspected him of smoking marijuana. DeHart refuses to get out of the vehicle and repeatedly denies smoking marijuana.

The second deputy, McCowan, then arrives at the scene and approaches the vehicle from the driver’s side, instructing DeHart to step out of the car. DeHart again refuses and Deputy Eggers opens the car door and attempts to pull DeHart out as he resists. After the suspect refused to comply to the Deputies, McCowan deployed his taser. The footage showed DeHart screaming and writhing in pain after he was hit multiple times with the taser. DeHart is seen slamming his door shut and releasing a barrage of gunfire towards both of the deputies. Body camera shows Deputy McCowan dropping to the ground. McCowan’s dash camera video shows Deputy Eggers getting shot and limping away toward a patrol car. DeHart then fires an additional shot before driving away as Deputy Eggers fires at the fleeing car. After the shooting, Deputy Eggers radioes that she and McCowan had been hit and flags down a vehicle. She calls for Deputy McCowan, but gets no response.

After radioing for assistance, she attempted to put a tourniquet on herself, with the footage showing blood on her leg. Moments later, a truck with a man and woman inside is seen pulling up beside Deputy Eggers and offering assistance. The man helped Deputy Eggers apply the tourniquet. The woman walked over to Deputy McCowan, then came back and said, “He’s not breathing.” Other officers arrive a short time later. Authorities later announced Deputy McCowan was killed in the shooting. The incident triggered a multi-day search for DeHart, including through wooded areas, as authorities warned the public of an armed and dangerous suspect. Deputy Eggers has since been released from the hospital. The suspect in the case, Kenneth DeHart, evaded police for nearly five days before he was captured at a home in Knoxville on Tuesday, the day before McCowan’s funeral. He was charged with first degree murder, attempted first degree murder, and felon in possession of a weapon. Three people have been charged with helping DeHart: his brother, Marcus DeHart, his girlfriend, Carrie Matthews, and a third individual identified as Maurice Warren.

  1. Would rather commit murder than take responsibility and accountability and just follow a few simple requests from law enforcement. But not surprising from a certain demographic who refuses to comply and is already a convicted felon in possession of an illegal gun!!

  2. The cop said there was no refusing to search his car??? I thought if you I say "I dont consent for a search and seizure," cops can't. Or am I wrong?

  3. I don’t know why they give a lot freedom to this black people they are different from other races you need to keep eyes on them every minute you need to something to remember them who are they and what used to do in past

  4. Was a Marijuana charge worth the life of an Officer. Officers out there, let it slide pls. The death toll keeps rising on both sides. The other fatal shooting video started as a tail light issue, escalated by a marijuana charge

  5. This sucks. Also why did she not have lethal ready. Gun is still holstered. Mccowan should be the one on Lethal and Deputy Eggers on Less Lethal.

  6. I’m so tired of seeing this happen. We have a whole segment of society that would rather take your life than be responsible for theirs. My heart breaks for this officer’s family.

  7. Rest easy officer! All that nonsense cause he didn't want to go to jail. He knew they would find that gun on him, that was the whole reason for his blatant disregard to follow a lawful command by these officers.

  8. Shes a terrible partner. She sat in that car looking at her partner dying and didnt do shit but talk on the radio.

  9. This 65 year old retired LEO cried watching this go down as I've been following this incident in the national news.

  10. I couldn’t even bring myself to watch the video after reading the description. Gives me chills and my heart aches for the officer’s family. It didn’t have to happen this way.

  11. It just goes on and on and never changes. The only thing that comes to mind is F CNN and F MSNBC. Most of you know why I say that. This one was particularly disgusting.

  12. He murdered a police officer because he had weed. That is how disgusting he is. And anyone who helped him needs hard time as well.

  13. Go to jail for having a gun in the car or go to jail for murdering a police officer and attempted murder or another. HMMM that is a hard choice. Dumb as peoplel smh
